US community-led local search site, Yelp, has announced the availability of the Yelp iOS and Android app in Australia.
If you are looking for the nearest bookstore, the nearest petrol station or a place to eat, this app will come in handy. You can use Yelp to help you find places to eat, shop, drink, relax and play then read reviews from an active community of locals.
All you have to do to sign up for a Yelp account is simply allowing it to extract information from your FaceBook account, instead of having to manually key your details in.
You can then search for businesses near you using the iPhone's built-in location finder, narrow them by location, distance, price, and what's open now or browse the reviews to read up on them. Or you can choose to create a ‘camera’ view of your surrounding and tap quick links that show directions to the nearest facilities to you.
A check-in feature enables you to display your location on your FaceBook.
Pros: Looks up addresses and phone numbers of businesses, call or map them from your iPhone.
Cons: Users can review places they have not yet visited, giving room for misleading information.
Verdict: An app that adds convenience to your life.
This app was reviewed on an iPhone 4.
