Govt kicks-off $8 million in-home NBN e-health trial for veterans

About 300 veterans in NBN early release sites will participate in the trial

The Federal Government has launched an $8 million in-home telemonitoring health trial for chronically ill veterans through the National Broadband Network (NBN).

The initiative was announced by Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon, and Communications Minister, Senator Stephen Conroy.

According to Snowdon, the telemonitoring technology will be beneficial to many veterans. Around 300 people will participate in the trial in NBN early release sites of Toowoonba in Queensland, Coffs Harbour and Armidale in NSW, Mandurah and Geraldton in WA along with Kingston Beach in Tasmania.

Along with monitoring of vital statistics by healthcare professionals, the trial will also allow for high-definition (HD) video consultations with doctors and nurses.

“Overseas experience has shown telemonitoring can have significant health benefits for those involved, including more responsible management of chronic conditions,” Snowdon said in a statement.

The trial will begin in July 2012.
