Huawei exceeds staff growth expectations

New contracts and market opportunities have seen the Chinese communications vendor grow to more than 700 staff in Australia

Chinese communications vendor, Huawei, has exceeded its staff growth expectations for the year in Australia, now employing more than 700 staff across five local offices.

In a statement, the vendor said it originally planned to double local staff headcount from 300 at the end of 2010 to 600 at the end of 2011. But after winning a significant amount of contract wins, the vendor exceeded its hiring figures.

“With more than 700 staff now employed across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth, Huawei Australia has more than doubled in size in just ten months – outpacing our own staff growth expectations for 2011,” Huawei corporate and public affairs director, Jeremy Mitchell, said in a statement.

Mitchell said it plans to continue to hire more staff in Australia to meet its business expansion requirements.

In Australia, the company expanded into new markets through creating a consumer devices brand and the recent launch of enterprise division.

The company landed its first commercial contract providing high-definition telepresence to Australia’s Academic Research Network, AARNet.

Major contracts with Vodafone and Optus also accelerated the rate of new local hires.

“This year Huawei was awarded a contract by Vodafone to replace its national 2G and 3G mobile networks, leading Huawei to hire hundreds of new staff,” Mitchell said. “Additionally, Huawei and Optus are now working to deliver Australia’s first trial of LTE (Long-Term Evolution) mobile technology in the 700MHz band, creating further demand for local employees. We’re confident this growth trend will continue throughout the last quarter of 2011.”

In April Huawei revealed it would be setting up a board of directors in Australia to help guide its local operations.

Since then it appointed former politicians John Brumby and Alexander Downer, as independent directors.

To help penetrate the enterprise space, it signed a distribution deal with Simms International in June.
