NSW police investigate $2.4 million printer cartridge theft

A worker from a Homebush Bay print and photocopy company has been charged for allegedly stealing 23,000 printer toner cartridges and on-selling them privately

NSW police have charged a worker at a printer and photocopying company in relation to the theft and subsequent sale of thousands of toner cartridges during the past six years.

It has been alleged the thefts occurred between 2005 and September this year, while the 35-year-old man was employed at a company based in Homebush Bay, Sydney.

Investigators allege approximately 23,000 printer toner cartridges had been stolen before being on-sold privately.

The total retail value of the theft is estimated to be worth $2.4 million.

At this stage, investigators from Flemington Local Area Command have laid charges in relation to the thefts which occurred this year, counting a total of 5000 items.

The man was charged yesterday afternoon at Auburn Police Station, with larceny as a clerk/servant.

He has been granted bail and will appear at Burwood Local Court on October 6.

Police also searched the man’s unit on Eve Street at Erskineville, where they allegedly seized 313 stolen toner cartridges.

Investigations are continuing and further charges will be laid.

It's people like this low life who push legitimate Cartridge businesses to the wall!!

@Not Happy - the “legitimate Cartridge businesses” will be laughing, as it seems fairly safe to assume that the accused’s employer paid for the cartridges that he stole. Actually, it probably means the cartridge businesses sold more to the company in question than they would have if the thefts hadn’t been taking place.

But it sounds like he was allegedly taking at least 15 cartridges a day! That’s a lot to smuggle out in your lunchbox.
