NBN Co has appointed former Leighton Contractors general manager, Rick Turchini, to the company board.

Leighton Contractors has connections with the National Broadband Network (NBN) through its sister companies Nextgen and Visionstream, both of which were involved in the NBN regional backspots program.

With more than 40 years experience in the construction business, Turchini worked as a civil engineer in the electricity sector before moving to Leighton Contractors.

He was with the construction firm for 23 years before retiring as general manager of New South Wales and ACT in 2003.

He stepped out of retirement in 2005 to work for another construction company, Baulderstone, before retiring again five years later.

Turchini was also once a member of the Australian Constructors Association Board.

"[His] construction experience, coupled with his management experience overseeing large infrastructure projects, will enhance the already strong skill set of the NBN Co board," Communications Minister, Senator Stephen Conroy, said in a statement.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
