NBN second release site construction start dates revealed

Construction to begin this month for some NSW locations and will gradually move to Queensland and the ACT later in the year

NBN Co has announced when National Broadband Network (NBN) construction will begin for the second release sites in NSW, QLD and the ACT.

Last week, Communications Minister, Senator Stephen Conroy, said construction dates for the second stage of the NBN mainland rollout would be announced soon for the Eastern states. Construction schedules for the rest of Australia would follow shortly.

The NBN’s construction plans were up in the air in April when NBN Co suspended all construction tenders with 14 companies due to dispute over terms and pricing.

In June, it was announced construction firm, Silcar, would takes over a big portion of fibre work for NBN Co in NSW, QLD and the ACT.

This round of construction will involve new locations as well as extension work for some first release sites. NBN Co is taking a module approach for the rollout, each covering 3000 premises.

Work will commence from August to the end of the year for nine locations: Coffs Harbour, Armidale, Kiama township, Jamberoo and Riverstone – all in NSW. For Queensland, it’s Townsville, Toowoomba, Goodna (Springfield Lakes), Aspley. Gungahlin in the ACT is also on the list.

It will take roughly 12 months from the start of construction for services to be activated in each location though there onsite planning and preparation work will need to be done before the rollout begins.

Preliminary work will begin for Armidale and Coffs Harbour.

According to NBN Co, the $11 billion deal with Telstra had partly helped to finalise the second release site rollout schedule.

“The use of Telstra’s infrastructure, where it is available, should reduce the amount of disruption for the community and provide a smoother and more efficient rollout,” NBN Co chief, Mike Quigley, said in a statement. “The plan is to continue the rollout by extending from the places where we have started in the first and second release sites, as well as add other sites as planning progresses.

“Our intention is to release a 12-month schedule, including new rollout sites, in the near future.”

Construction dates for the rest of the other mainland states are yet to be announced.
