LATEST: Android Honeycomb 3.1 update for Acer Iconia

Update delivers increased system performance with enhanced peripheral support and enterprise support

Acer Iconia consumers can now access the latest Google Android Honeycomb 3.1 update on their tablets.

The update delivers increased system performance with enhanced peripheral support and enterprise support, while offering support for USB and Bluetooth input devices.

Other key features include HTML5 video content support, additional video file format support, more robust Wi-Fi networking, an updated set of standard apps and greater enterprise support to Acer’s Iconia A500 Tab.

Acer Computer Australia smart handheld devices product manager, David Niu, said all Iconia Tab A500 owners will receive a notification prompt of the update.

“From browsing the Web to taking advantage of the USB support for mouse, cameras and even gamepads, using the updated OS will become more seamless with new multimedia formats supported and business connectivity improvements,” he said.

The update also provides greater enterprise support and email accounts manageability.

Google Android Honeycomb 3.1 improvements also include: UI transition animation refined with smoother transition to and from the apps list, resizeable home screen widgets, proxy and IP configuration backed up and restoration across system updates and resets and Microsoft Exchange server support (ActiveSync protocol).

06/07/11 UPDATE: Due to numerous comments and some confusion surrounding the update, ARN contacted Acer, which confirmed that the current update in Australia is Android Honeycomb 3.1. The company product manager said 3.0.1 was a FOTA update back in May and that the 3.1 update will only show after the 3.0.1 update has been applied properly.

Acer commented that in maintaining the server balance, the device lists (Australian version) are updated to the server in batches and intends to complete it shortly. As such, some users should already have received the update.

I just got the upgrade to 3.1 and it claimed to have been successful. However the Android version indicator still shows 3.0.1. Is there another way of telling if the update was successful?

Maybe if you restart your tab it'll update the version number...wish this update was available for me, you in aus?

I do think the update is to insure all users are on the same page before the 3.1 is unloaded.

Hello guys.. I did get the update yesterday. Says. 3.1 Everything seems to be working great so far. Hopefully the updates will roll out for everybody else soon. I am in the states.

before you can update to 3.1 you have to update to 3.0.1. Those of you getting that update must have that update before 3.1 can roll out to you.

South- America (Suriname) no update yet, only 3.0.1. some weeks ago. Acer what's up, can't they just also post it online as an OS update?

I was already at 3.0.1 but it did not update to 3.1. Calling a live person on tech support for Acer was not sure when it would be updated. The response was that Acer is rolling out the updates a little at a time to stop the server from being taxed with everyone updating...

The update I received however has made using the tablet much better. I'm not having to worry about the tablet turning on by itself all the time. It has definately increased my battery life. I'm still not sure why the cell tower issueis still showing up for a wifi only version...

ARN is continuing to try to contact Acer with regards to the update issue. We have received mixed responses from all over the world and will update this story as soon as we receive a comment from Acer; they are all currently out at a conference.

Still no update yet, and I'm in Ontario, Canada. I had a live online chat with Acer Support today, and he said it would be available to me within the next day. If not, he advised that I can call back and they'd escalate.

Hi, I just got 3.1. I'm in Melbourne, Australia.

The whole update /installation took about 20 minutes.

Ive just restarted my tablet and verified that my os version is now 3.1.

I still have a question though, i thought that the 3.1 version allowed you to specify proxy settings. How is that done???

Cause to be honest, I dont see any differences with the new version.

I got my update this morning too. I am in Melbourne, Australia. Did not manage to test a lot but noted a couple of apps added, you tube seemed smoother for HD, seems faster opening pages or moving screens, widgets are be resized,,,

Just got the update. Its quite good - I can notice all of the improvements and it really is a lot smoother and faster. Love the new mouse support - really handy for web browsing. Games play a lot smoother as well. Btw I'm in Melbourne Australia.

just got the update this morning and it was a success. then came afternoon, i can't connect to any wifi (home and at work). restarted my tablet and router and still had the same problem... is there anyone had the same problem like me?

Still no update. I'm going to take this unit back if they don't update it shortly I need the exchange for work. It was promised on the 5th... its now the 11th!

I wouldn't get to exited about the proxy settings people. It is only for the browser. None of the apps get access. Might as well give up and go to the ipad. It works perfectly...

Just updated my acer from adroid 3.0.1 to 3.1. Under settings -> about tablet -> Android version now reads 3.1 but kernel version has remained the same.

Downloaded the update, but stopped part way through installation with an error....something to do with the calendar???? Haven't even used the calendar! Am in Brisbane Australia. Android version reading 3.0.1....
