Internet Industry Association’s blocklist of child pornography sites will be supported: ISPs

The Internet Industry Association's (IIA) recently released voluntary code of practice for Australian ISPs to block child pornography sites has been welcomed by Optus and iiNet.

A blocklist compiled and supplied by Interpol in co-operation with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) forms the backbone of the initiative.

Optus said it was another step towards reducing access to sexual abuse material on the web.

“Optus will honour its commitment to block child sexual abuse material on the web and will work with the AFP to implement the Interpol 'Worst of' list, an approach which blocks the worst of the worst child sexual abuse material,” Optus regulatory compliance general manager, Gary Smith, said in reaction to IIA’s announcement.

“This is a safe, credible and tested approach which has been implemented in other countries with proven results.”

Another large ISP, iiNet, already has a long track record in assisting law enforcement agencies to deal with all sorts of illegal activities on the Internet, such as the illegal distribution of a variety of materials.

“It shouldn't come as a surprise to find out that service providers like iiNet cooperate with LEAs on a daily basis,” iiNet chief regulatory officer, Steve Dalby, said after hearing IIA's announcement.

“If we can assist with this we will, within the usual frameworks that have existed for many years.”

Optus is already planning to work with the IIA and other ISPs to develop a code based on the framework that was released by the IIA following the announcement.
