$1.4m injected into NICTA gigabit wireless technology

The government wants to fast-track the commercialisation of the research organisation's GiFi product

The Federal Government is providing $1.4 million additional funding for the commercialisation of NICTA’s gigabit wireless, or ‘GiFi’ technology.

NICTA is a government-funded ICT research organisation.

The grant comes from Commercialisation Australia, a government assistance program for companies, entrepreneurs, researchers and inventors.

NICTA’s spin-off company, Nitero, is the recipient of the funds. It will use the money to “dramatically reduce the size, power consumption and cost” of the GiFi product it has developed. This way the device is adaptable to a range of consumer products such as PCs, tablets and smartphones.

GiFi, which is a high-frequency wireless technology, was first revealed by NICTA in 2008.

The very next year the technology was showcased by the organisation and was touted as a possible replacement for HDMI and USB cables for homes as well as offices.

The product is capable of facilitating high-speed data transfer between devices.

“We’ve seen significant interest from the global electronics industry in our 60GHz solution to date,” Nitero CEO, Patrick Kelly, said in a statement.

“This substantial support for the Australian government will allow us to continue to develop our product and bring the benefits of 60GHz to consumers worldwide.”

Over 10 PhD students have contributed to the development of Nitero’s GiFi over the years.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
