Optus Networks new managing director, Günther Ottendorfer, has plenty of experience in telecommunications field to call on having spent more than 20 years with several European companies, including Deutsche Telekom and max.mobil.
In announcing Ottendorfer's appointment, Optus Chief Executive, Paul O’Sullivan, described him as "a passionate customer centric leader".
“As head of Optus Networks, Günther joins our management team and is responsible for the day-to-day running of all Optus networks as well as further strategic investment in our IP, fixed and mobile network in the lead up to the launch of the National Broadband Network."
He said Ottendorfer had a wealth of technical and commercial knowledge as well as experience implementing convergent future technologies, across IP, mobile and fixed networks.
Prior to joining Optus, Günther was European Mobile Technical Director at T-Mobile (Deutsche Telekom) overseeing the company’s mobile networks across continental Europe. He managed multiple territories and the expansion of the operations including the planned roll out of Long Term Evolution (LTE) or 4G for 100 million customers.
Ottendorfer was also influential in the European business community as the Chamber of Commerce of Austria's chairman for Austrian telecommunications and broadcasting companies, and as a board member for the Next Generation Mobile Organisation.
Ottendorfer said, “In 2011 exciting changes are taking place and we are on the next wave of innovative technology coming into the hands of our customers. I will ensure that Optus is at the forefront of investing to deliver innovation and quality to our customers."
His appointment is effective immediately.
The previous Optus Network MD, Soo Meng Tay, has returned to SingTel as the Executive Vice-President of SingTel Networks.

Gunther is making all the right noises and it looks like Singtel no longer feel the need to have their man in charge to keep Optus honest. Let's hope he can deliver and get the projects funded to step up to telstra and not slip back behind VHA.

Gunther has a fantastic track record across Germany and Austria, he is a recognised name across Europe. I know that his honesty and knowledge will take Optus customers to an unforgettably experience in telecommunication. Furthermore I like to welcome Gunther to Australia and wish him all the best in his career with Optus.
