Mobile commerce set to boom: PayPal

68 per cent of Australians are comfortable with mobile commerce, according to PayPal research

Mobile commerce is expected to have a big impact on the Australian retail landscape, according to the mCommerce: Secure Insight research published by PayPal.

According to the report, mobile payments grew “14 fold” in 2010, and 68 per cent of Australians plan on making mobile payments in the near future.

It helps that 65 per cent of mobile devices are now Internet-enabled – a key component to mobile commerce growth.

Also, according to the report, the most popular time for shopping is when consumers are travelling, meaning mCommerce is a convenience message.

In a release, PayPal managing director, Frerk-Malte Feller, said: “With the arrival of mCommerce we expect to see more change in the retail industry in the next three years than we have seen in the last decade.

“In the last quarter, our merchants have enjoyed a 25 per cent month on month increase in total mobile payment volumes. Retailers must embrace mCommerce now or risk being left behind. Australian retailers were late to the eCommerce market and cannot afford to make the same mistake again.”

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
