Gotcha! More bad guys bust from phone taps and intercepts

Information gathered through intercepts delivers 1913 arrests in 2009-10

Arrests achieved through telecommunication intercepts have risen four per cent, according to the Federal Government.

The use of phone taps and other forms of intercept are tightly controlled but are often necessary to crack organised crime rings.

"Access to these investigative tools is crucial in tackling serious criminal activities such as terrorism, child pornography and drug trafficking," Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, said in a statement.

"At the same time, it is important that we have strict oversight to ensure these powers are used appropriately while protecting the privacy of law abiding Australians."

Information gathered through intercepts delivered 1913 arrests in 2009-10.

The statement said intercepted information was used in evidence in obtaining 2,198 convictions that year.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
