Telstra customers wishing to check on loved ones in Japan can do so for free as the telco offers free calls and text messages to the disaster-stricken nation.
Telstra fixed-line and mobile customers will not be billed for calls to Japan between 6am March 11 to 6am March 25.
The island country of Japan was hit by a 8.9 earthquake which led to a devastating tsumani that hit coastal towns in the North-East.
Thousands of residents are still unaccounted for at this stage. The town of Sendai was hit the hardest by the tsunami.
Telstra is also donating $100,000 to the Japanese Red Cross Society.
“Telstra has strong ties to Japan, with a number of employees based in Tokyo servicing our local customers and many employees in Australia with family and friends affected by the disaster,” Telstra International group managing director, Tarek Robbiati, said in a statement.
“Telstra is committed to supporting its customers and the Japanese community through this emergency.”

Thank you.
This is great help for us Japanese who live in Australia.

This a very nice gesture on the part of Telstra. It is one small detail that we do not need to worry about while seeking news of loved ones far from home and family. Thank you.
