Greens win deal for NBN inquiry to be more neutral

Committee overseeing the NBN's rollout won't have a Government majority

The Joint Parliamentary Committee overseeing the rollout of the National Broadband Network will not have a Government majority thanks to a deal with the Australian Greens.

According to a statement issued by the Greens’ communications spokesperson, Scott Ludlam, the negotiation on the composition, timing and terms of reference for the NBN committee took “all summer”.

"I am pleased we've reached a fair outcome, and I look forward to the committee picking up the oversight role that for the last several years was performed solely by a Senate select committee,” he said in the statement.

“We have spent the summer negotiating broader terms of reference…and ensuring that it gets to work right away, rather than waiting until July before getting started.”

Committees formed to oversee major rollouts have traditionally been stacked by the incumbent Government to prevent negative reports about the issue.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
