Unisys cements four-year deal with Qantas

The IT service provider will implement and host an RFID baggage check-in system

IT service provider, Unisys, has cemented a deal with Australian airline, Qantas, for a self-service baggage check-in system.

The four-year agreement will see Unisys offer systems integration, implementation and applications hosting for the baggage reconciliation system (BRS) at the company’s Sydney datacentre.

Radio frequency Identification (RFID) technology will be used to track and verify bags, which has already been trialled in Perth in July.

The first step of the full implementation will see passengers print out bag tags with barcodes, dubbed Q Bag Tags, at designated kiosks before dropping bags off. The barcodes will be scanned to link bags to individual passenger flight information.

Sydney is slated to receive the new BRS next month and will be available to Platinum, Gold and Silver Qantas frequent flyer members.

In June 2009, Unisys also signed a five-year $25 million deal with the Board of Airline Representatives Australia (BARA) for a similar type of BRS. BARA represents 44 international airlines from eight Australian international airports.
