Mainland NBN operations facility set for Melbourne

Facility to be up and running by early next year

NBN Co has picked Melbourne as the site for its mainland network operations and testing facility for the National Broadband Network (NBN).

Much like its network operations centre (NOC) in Tasmania, the Melbourne building will be the place to monitor and manage the NBN network, facilities, order services and let ISPs test services before a rollout.

A 4000sqm office space has been taken up at Melbourne’s Digital Harbour development in Docklands for the fit-out of the operations centre and testing facilities.

Four floors of the Innovations Building will host the network and service operations centre (NSOC), service activation centre and a national test facility.

It is set to be operating by early next year before the first mainland NBN release sites are switched on. Construction work will go out to tender soon.

According to a statement by NBN Co CEO, Mike Quigley, up to 425 people will work at the facility.

“This facility will be the centrepiece of our network and the key interference with our customers, the retail service providers, who will be using our network to provide high-speed services to their businesses and residential customers across Australia,” he said in a statement.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
