QLD energy agency builds secure Wi-Fi network

Network up by September

Queensland government electricity agency Powerlink will roll out a secure Wi-Fi network for four of its primary sites .

The roll out will reach Powerlink’s Virginia office complex, a campus and disaster recovery site, Virginia warehouse workshop complex, and its new Narangba-based warehouse.

According to Powerlink documents, the major driver for the project is to enable staff to access information stored on corporate repositories in real-time without having to connect directly to the wired network.

“Within the corporate environment, staff will have the ability to work freely anywhere at the Virginia and other sites without being restricted by physical wiring,” the documents read.

“From a warehouse perspective, stock control, despatching and ordering can be undertaken no matter where staff are located in the warehouse facility. By realigning business processes and underpinning them with an automated solution, stock management can be improved and stock errors significantly reduced.”

The new network, due to be up and running by September, will also include a guest management solution, logging and log correlation and management software.

Powerlink has about 500 laptops and approximately 100 handheld devices, mostly iPhone or Windows Mobile-based.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
