Government calls for software reseller services

Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations wants to establish a panel of suitably qualified providers

The Federal Government is calling for a Request for Tender (RFT) for the provision of software reseller services including maintenance, support and the ability to consolidate Symantec and Adobe product suites.

The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations is seeking to establish a panel of suitably qualified providers, with demonstrated capability to provide software reseller services.

According to RFT documents, the provision of software products and related services are currently provided through multiple contractors, but not through a designated reseller relationship.

The department supports in excess of 7500 internal and approximately 20,000 external users. “This is done primarily via a Windows mid-range environment of more than 2000 physical and virtual servers, as well as via an IBM Z series mainframe,” RFT documents said.

The nominated reseller will have the ability to provide one or more of the following software products: Adobe products under a new, Tier 2, Adobe Cumulative Licensing Program; and/or Symantec enterprise-level products. The reseller will also be familiar with VMware, Citrix and/or Trend Micro products.

Knowledge of license types, including perpetual; licence subscription/lease; and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is also recommended.

Sydney-based IT consultancy, Nexus, is considering pitching for the job, particularly the Adobe part of the business given its technical expertise.

“We will be looking at this,” principal, Sean Murphy, told ARN. “We have a lot of experience with the distribution of enterprise licenses and the Adobe product.”

He said the company is in a better position to pitch for tenders now that it has done the “hard yards” over the last five years in terms of obtaining appropriate insurance, having demonstrable certifications and solid vendor partnerships.

“We’ve spent a great deal of time going through the paperwork and getting ready to pitch our services,” he said. “We tend not to go for a lot of tenders unless we can demonstrate our expertise and clearly demonstrate we have a leg up on the competition.”

The company’s areas of expertise include strategy development, server implementation and virtualisation, advanced storage systems, networking, security and end-to-end systems, he added.

Tender closing time is slated for July 19, 2010.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.

I'm sorry but I'm a simple man, but. 27,500 users on 2,000 Servers! Um... OK, some are mail servers, some are application servers, some are perception modulators...but
Shouldn't we be hoping for a slightly higher density than 3 users per server?
