Telstra has completed the upgrade of its Next G HSPA+ network with speeds to rival 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks, according to the telco.
Now featuring dual carrier technology, the refreshed network can send and receive wireless data using two channels to provide peak download speeds of up to 42Mbps.
Telstra partnered with telecommunications vendor, Ericsson, along with Qualcomm and Sierra Wireless for the Dual Carrier chipset and device.
The move was motivated by increasing wireless broadband capacity demands. 4G LTE technology, which can provide gigabit-speed Internet access, is still on Telstra’s agenda but it saw HSPA+ as a viable option for expansion.
"With HSPA+ Dual Carrier technology, we expect to offer speeds that are comparable to the initial speeds we have seen reported from some fledgling 4G LTE networks," Telstra CEO, David Thodey, said in a statement. "While LTE remains on Telstra's technology roadmap, there is a huge amount of potential remaining in HSPA+.
“We will take full advantage of this by again doubling our peak network speeds to 84Mbps through the implementation of HSPA+ Dual Carrier plus multiple input multiple output [MIMO] technology during 2011.”
Telstra also unveiled a HSPA+ Dual Carrier compatible receiver, dubbed Ultimate USB modem, to coincide with the launch of the new upgrade.
Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.

I'm pleased that telstra is going 4g lte and i'm looking forward going over to 4g lte 700 mhz and it would be great in the country and the goverment should bring forward to switch off analog tv earlyer then 2013 it should be switched off at the same time with analog tv or move band 5 tv transmissions to band 4. To anyone who has problems with telephone company's with mobile phone recption www.tio.com.au they are the telecommunication indersty obmanson and they have a ph number 1800 062 058 number and if you want to break a contract on a mobile phone plan and if they say you are in a coverage aria where you live and if you get no signal you let them know and they get into the highest department in the phone company and it is amazing what gets done very quickly but it is best if you have phoned the company about the problem about the black spot problem like optus does not show black spots on the network coverage maps on the net you have phone them about coverage i don't know about vodafone
