Amcom nabs $20m NT Government fibre contract

Telecommunications player will set up office in Darwin to explore additional business opportunities

Telecommunications player, Amcom (ASX:AMM), has signed a $20 million contract to extend its Northern Territory fibre networks in Darwin and Alice Springs to service the state’s government.

The agreement entails providing fibre to facilitate data carriage services to Northern Territory government agencies and schools. The deal is valued at $20 million over five years and Amcom will establish an office in Darwin seek out other businesses in the region.

“The additional fibre optic infrastructure to be installed in Darwin and Alice Springs will enable us to leverage other commercial opportunities and introduce new data products for business customers, who to date have had limited access to high-speed services,” Amcom CEO, Clive Stein, said in a statement.

Fibre network expansion activities commence this month and Diamond Communication, a subsidiary of Ausdrill, has been contracted for the project.

Amcom said its Northern Territory fibre assets will complement the Federal Government’s $250 million blackspot program to provide broadband backbone for regional areas.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
