Tandberg: We’re NBN ready

Video-conferencing vendor interested in working with the NBNco

Tandberg is ready for the $43 billion National Broadband Network (NBN) and is eager to collaborate with the NBNco.

The Norwegian video-conferencing stalwart said its products are already suitable for high-speed broadband networks. Drawing from experiences in other markets such as Norway, Tandberg expects a surge in unified communications adoption due to the NBN’s promise of fast and reliable broadband.

“The high-definition [HD] efficiency of the equipment makes it very possible to run business grade video-conferencing over public networks now so it’s ready to go,” Tandberg regional director, Philip Siefert, said.

The vendor was excited by the business applications of video-conferencing and telepresence facilitated by the NBN, he said. With tertiary education and healthcare as its top verticals, Tandberg is particularly focused on communications solutions to aid distance education students and improve health services in rural areas through the impending network.

NBNco, the government-owned company charged with manning the network’s rollout, has begun calling for potential suppliers to submit expressions of interest, but it’s still in the initial stages.

“[NBNco] is at an early stage so we are certainly actively looking for opportunities to do trials and things on the NBN,” Siefert said.

Last year, networking vendor, Cisco, announced its intentions to acquire Tandberg. The deal is worth $US3.4 billion and is expected to be finalised first quarter 2010.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
