Analyst: IT jobs to grow faster than others

Expectations come as December shows slow and steady job growth

The Australian IT jobs industry is set is set to rebound faster than the national average, according to Olivier Group director, Robert Olivier.

The director’s predictions come as the Olivier Report shows steady jobs growth for December, in line with the Australian average. The index was up 0.48 per cent in December. IT jobs were up 0.49 per cent in the same month.

“The December/January period is always the most volatile and hardest or most dangerous to interpret,” he said. “I expect January will be stronger for us.”

Desktop support and helpdesk jobs fell 10.5 per cent in December. But IT management and sales roles rose well, jumping 8.6 per cent. Software development rose 1.5 per cent.

WA fared the best out of all the states. IT jobs rose by 16.68 per cent. However, the biggest ICT states, NSW and Victoria, recorded falls of 0.68 and 1.71 per cent, respectively.

But Olivier predicted strong gains during his predicted jobs rebound in 2010.

“I don’t think the resource-rich states will do too much hiring because the basic jobs need to be filled first, so I think Victoria and NSW will still dominate and charge ahead,” he said. “The greatest opportunities will be there.”

Despite the slow pace of growth, Olivier emphasised the strong gain in the jobs market in the past six months.

“Overall, the IT jobs market is down 31.41 per cent over the past 12 months. In the last six months, it’s risen by 12.06 per cent so you can see the extent of that period’s strength and those are both outperforming the national average,” he said.

The analyst was able to push back the clock slightly and predict good rebounding figures in IT jobs by the early part of the second quarter, with double digit rises in the works.

‘It’s not going to be an IT-led recovery, but the recovery will lead IT through,” Olivier said.
