Kodak sues Apple, RIM over camera patents

The complaint follows a successful one that Kodak recently won against Samsung

Kodak has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission charging Apple and Research In Motion with infringing patents in products with cameras.

The suit claims that the iPhone and BlackBerry devices with cameras infringe a Kodak patent that allows image previews.

Kodak recently settled a similar case against Samsung. In that case, an ITC judge issued an initial determination ruling that Samsung had infringed the image preview patent.

Earlier this month the companies announced that they’d formed a cross-licensing deal and Kodak asked the ITC to dismiss the case.

Kodak also filed suits against Apple in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York. The first is related to patents covering image preview and processing.

The second suit is related to patents used when computer software interacts with other software. Kodak sued Sun Microsystems over those patents and won, it said.

Kodak said that it has been in discussions “for years” with both Apple and RIM to try to resolve the dispute.

It also said that it doesn’t want to halt sales of the companies’ products, although in the ITC complaint Kodak asks for an exclusion order that would prevent the importation of phones that use the patents.

Neither Apple nor RIM replied to requests for comment at the time this story was published.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
