IDC: NAS systems taking market share in Australia

New storage figures for Q3, 2009 show demand for NAS systems in Australia, while total terabytes shipped as average prices fall

Unstructured data demands and NAS-based systems are significantly influencing Australia’s storage market, new IDC figures show.

The analyst group’s quarterly tracker report found total terabytes shipped in Australia during Q3, 2009 reached 40,552TB, up from 33,197TB a year ago. The figures were also a marked improvement on Q2’s result of 37,340TB, as well as the 26,368TB shipped in Q1.

IDC storage analyst, Reco Li, said NAS-based offerings experienced the most solid results, snatching market share away from more traditional Fibre Channel, SAN-based storage. The installed SAN base in Australia dropped by 5.2 per cent, while NAS rose 3.7 per cent quarter-on-quarter.

Li added NetApp and EMC were the biggest winners from strong demand for NAS systems in Australia during Q3, taking out first and second position in the vendor list. Across customer segments, government spending recorded the fastest growth, followed by financial services, media and communications.

He added A/NZ turned in the better margin performance across the region.

“It was indeed extraordinary considering the number of large deals in the mix, which tend to command lower margins,” Li said.

But while storage needs and terabytes are exponentially rising, total revenue in Q3 dropped year-on-year, along with the average price per GB of storage. Li attributed the result to slower economic conditions and rapidly maturing technology. He predicted things wouldn’t heat up again until 2011.

“The Australian economy is starting to perform better than expected and has avoided a recession, but the GDP growth forecast for calendar 2010 will be an anemic 0.5 per cent,” he said. “IDC storage research still projects the lower growth in dollar spending in the A/NZ market.

“However, new ways of accessing storage, such as the cloud, will rise and provide the sufficient functions and facilities the majority of public users and private companies.”

Overall, EMC represented 24.6 per cent of total sale revenue, followed by NetApp with 15.42 per cent. Across the external storage market, NetApp took the lead from Q2’s leader, HP, to chalk up the largest marketshare in Q3 (19.7 per cent). It was followed by EMC (19 per cent) and Dell (14.9 per cent).
