LG to demonstrate 100Mbps LTE modem

LG will also show a technology that can link LTE and CDMA networks

LG Electronics MobileComm plans to demonstrate a next-generation cellular modem that can download data at speeds up to 100M bits per second.

LG will demonstrate the LTE (Long-Term Evolution) USB modem at the International Consumer Electronics Show, which opens on Thursday in Las Vegas. The modem is capable of downloading data at 100M bps (bits per second) and can upload data at speeds up to 50M bps, LG said in a news release.

The company also plans to demonstrate a "handover technology" that allows operators to link LTE networks with their existing CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) networks, it said.

Billed as a fourth-generation cellular technology, LTE is making its way into commercial networks as an eventual replacement for 3G networks.

Last month, TeliaSonera began offering LTE services in Oslo and Stockholm with downloads speeds up to 80M bps. That service uses modems manufactured by Samsung Electronics.

In Japan, NTT DoCoMo has started construction of an LTE network and will roll out a commercial service offering download speeds up to 100M bps later this year. The operator expects the service's download speed to eventually reach 300M bps
