OLPC unveils 'unbreakable' netbook

Touchscreen device made from one sheet of plastic

The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) group has unveiled a new netbook made from one sheet of plastic, which it claims is "unbreakable".

OLPC doesn't expect the touchscreen XO 3.0 to be available until 2012 and hasn't revealed full specification details for the device, which is thought to cost less than US$100 (£67).

However, it did reveal it the "inner workings" would come from the XO 1.75 - another new machine unveiled by the company.

The XO 1.75 is an 8.9in touchscreen netbook with external rubber bumper due in 2011. OLPC said it will use an ARM processor, that "enables two times the speed at a quarter the power". It is thought, the XO 1.75 will cost around US$150 (£94).

Finally, OLPC also unveiled the XO 1.5, which boasts the same design as the XO 1.0 but replaces the AMD processor with a VIA unit, which makes the netbook two times faster.

It also features four times more RAM and four times more flash memory. Running both Linux and Windows the XO 1.5 will be available in January, priced at US$200 (£125).

"The first version of OLPC's child-centric laptop, the XO, is a revolution in low-cost, low-power computing. OLPC will continue to innovate in design and performance," said Nicholas Negroponte, founder and chairman of One Laptop per Child.
