Corning Cable Systems wins second Tasmanian NBN tender

Regional centres Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point to be provisioned with new broadband cabling

Corning Cable Systems has been awarded a contract from NBN Tasmania to supply the fibre optic cable to connect around 5000 homes and businesses to the National Broadband Network (NBN).

The contract was awarded by Aurora Energy on behalf of NBN Tasmania and is in addition to an earlier contract awarded to Corning for the supply of fibre optic backhaul cable. Communities to be supplied under the new tender are Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point. Following the installation, expected to conclude in mid 2010, those communities will have access to broadband at speeds of up to 100Mbps.

Tasmania is the guinea pig for the Government’s NBN rollout, with the rollout developing through much of the second half of the year. The Government and Aurora Energy’s jointly-owned NBN Tasmania was announced in July.

Corning won its first fibre optic contract with NBN Tasmania in October.
