Juniper drives partner custom applications on Junos

Juniper Networks has launched new software for its Junos operating system to allow a greater level of customisation for resellers and customers.

The new software is based on an open cross-network platform and includes the Junos network operating system, the new Junos Space network application platform and the new Junos Pulse integrated network client. The solutions are accompanied by cloud networking and security solutions based on the Junos software platform and systems.

The launch marks a fundamental shift in the way Juniper does business, director for fabric and switching Asia-Pacific, Greg Bunt, said.

“We think of Junos as the glue that sticks our other pieces of IP together,” he said. “We wanted to enable people to interact with the operating system, rather than be just a user of it – so we’ve built in the ability for people to access the OS like a software development toolkit.”

Juniper’s Junos platform continues to battle with Cisco’s IOS operating system for market presence.

Earlier this year, the vendor renewed its calls for partners to get on-board with the platform and highlighted its desire to have customers and partners work at developing custom applications.

The new software will provide much broader opportunities for channel partners to interact and tailor the Junos OS when approaching customers as a value-add, Bunt claimed.

“If a customer has a unique requirement, they can have their reseller or integrator partner write an application for the OS to run,” he said. “We have a priority goal to broaden our channel interaction, and their ability to sell and enhance their product by adding their own flavour to the product.”

Starting from November, Juniper will be running education initiatives to help partners understand what value they can add. While there will be no need for formal certification, Bunt said, the vendor does want its partners properly guided when developing custom solutions.

As part of the launch, Juniper also announced new OEM partnerships with Dell and IBM to deliver Juniper systems as part of their cloud-ready datacentre solutions. Juniper has also formed its first software licensing partnerships with Blade Network Technologies which will develop future blade switches based on the Junos operating system.
