Local smartphone ISV teams up with Cellmania

BigTinCan has grand ambitions to boost its user-base in South-East Asia.

Australian ISV, BigTinCan, has conquered BlackBerry’s online store, App World, as part of efforts to widen its smartphone applications distribution.

BigTinCan has partnered with Cellmania, a US-based global directory of mobile applications, to sell the ISV’s BuzzMe and Mapper smartphone apps. BigTinCan already works with similar outlets as well as selling through Apple's App Store.

BigTinCan CEO, David Keane, said soaring popularity and increased competition between application retailers motivated the deal with Cellmania. It recently announced its products achieved top positions in the App World’s paid and free apps category.

The company has 2.5 million global users mainly in North America and Europe. Keane said its latest affiliation will broaden its global coverage and reach new territories such as South East Asia and India, where smartphone sales have increased exponentially.

“Those areas provide really exciting opportunities because they are incredibly dynamic markets,” Keane said. “We are really expecting to get hundreds and thousands – and eventually millions – of new users within the next 12 months on Cellmania.”

Keane saw smartphone apps as a strong growth area presenting ample opportunities for local ISVs.

“There are already a number of successful smartphone ISVs. I think its only going to get better as this is one of those industries were you really can approach it on a global basis even if you are based in Australia,” he said.

“We are quite positive on what opportunities there are for other ISVs in the smartphone market.”

BigTinCan’s BuzzMe is a smartphone customisation app, while Mapper is an open street mapping program. Cellmania customers can purchase the apps online or directly from their phone which will be charged on their telephone bill.
