Stage 2 of Tasmanian NBN announced

Construction on stage 1 yet to commence and stage 2 timetables yet to be released

The Federal and Tasmanian Governments have announced seven new locations to receive fibre optic broadband as part of stage two of the National Broadband Network rollout in the State.

According to a joint release by the PM, Tasmanian Premier and Minister for Broadband, the seven locations are: Sorell, Deloraine, George Town, St Helens, Triabunna, Kingston Beach, South Hobart.

As part of the rollout, fibre backbone will be constructed along the east coast of the state to Kingston as well as a new industrial hub in Westbury.

Detailed planning for the rollout, including timeframes, number of premises connected and procurement details, is set to commence now.

“The stage 2 rollout will connect communities which are mostly underserviced relative to major metropolitan areas and stand most to gain from high speed broadband services,” the media release said.

Although the first stage of the Tasmanian NBN was announced in July, construction of the program is only set to begin within the next two months.

The first NBN services in Tasmania are scheduled to be available from mid-2010.
