NBN Tasmania awards fibre contract to Corning

The US-based company will provision and manage the fibre cables in Tasmania

NBNco’s younger sibling, NBN Tasmania, has awarded its optic fibre cable tender to US-based Corning Cable Systems for the state’s National Broadband Network (NBN) implementation.

Under the arrangement, Corning will provision and manage the cables in Tasmania’s fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network. NBN Tasmania is jointly owned subsidiary of NBNco and Aurora Energy and will oversee the cable rollout in its designated part of the NBN. The tender was opened in July, which coincided with the announcement of TNBNco.

First stage of the cable deployment will commence within the next two months and connect 5000 homes in Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point communities. The deal will run for three years with a possible extension for another two on a year-to-year basis.

NBN Tasmania executive chairman, Doug Campbell, said in a statement that the announcement showed the company, along with Aurora Energy, was able to mobilise resources quickly to ensure the rollout.

In July, Australian fibre maker, Optimal, told ARN it planned to participate in the tender.
