Cameron looks to stay within IT channel

Outgoing Lenovo managing director says he hopes to continue creating opportunities for partners

Driving new channel opportunities within the IT industry remains top of the list for Lenovo’s departing managing director, Phil Cameron.

The PC vendor announced Cameron will step down at the end of September after 18 months in the role. He is being replaced by former local chief, Alan Munro, who has spent the past year-and-a-half working in international and European roles.

Speaking to ARN, Cameron said it was his time to move on and find new challenges and opportunities. He declined to comment on the specific details of his exit from Lenovo, but said he had reached an “amicable” outcome with the vendor.

“You reach a point in your career when you need to seek out new opportunities and challenges and it’s my time to do that,” he said. “I’m proud to have been with IBM/Lenovo for the past eight years and have worked with the best people in the PC business. I take with me lots of fond memories and look forward to new challenges.”

Cameron hoped to stay within the IT industry working with the channel and indicated there were already a few irons in the fire.

“I’m very passionate about the channel and interested in creating new opportunities for channel partners,” he said.

Lenovo’s contract with NSW Department of Education and Training to provide 220,000 netbooks under the $110 million student mini-laptop tender, and its increasingly dominant presence in Australia’s education sector, were key milestones during his tenure as managing director, Cameron said.

“We are a small team that has punched above our weight,” he added.
