Perth to get fastest wireless broadband in Australia

Set to be Australia's first 4G network using WiMAX and LTE hardware from Huawei

Perth is set to receive the fastest wireless broadband network in Australia by early 2010.

Unwired has been brought on to build and operate the nation’s first 4G network across the Western Australian capital, which will be sold to customers through a new Seven Network Limited subsidiary, VividWireless.

The Ryan Stokes-chaired company is spending $50 million to rollout the network and will be using China-based Huawei as its hardware provider. Former Telstra director of marketing, Martin Mercer, has been appointed as CEO.

The technology will be initially built using WiMAX technology before being added to with Long Term Evolution (LTE) hardware, which is seen by many telcos to be the natural successor to 3G networks. According to a statement release by VividWireless, 4G wireless broadband customers will have access to average speeds of 4Mbps and peak speeds of 20Mbps.

The vendor claimed it will be the nation's only WiMAX broadband network with 150 base stations being supplied.

“VividWireless has access to the largest allocation of 4G spectrum in metropolitan Australia,” Stokes said in the statement. “The wide application of services allows Seven Network Limited to further strengthen its digital platform connecting broadband users to the internet and burgeoning multi-media solutions.”
