NEC and OptiComm deploy open access fibre network in Victorian estate

University Hill is the first site to receive the partnership FTTP network

Following on from a freshly-forged alliance, NEC and OptiComm have kick-started their planned fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network at Victoria’s University Hill.

The telecommunications wholesaler teamed up with NEC in March and announced their ambitions to build and maintain an open access fibre infrastructure for more than 50,000 contracted lots for residential and mixed businesses with the vendor supplying the core and access technology.

The estates property developer, MAB Corporation, called on OptiComm to provide up to 100Mbps broadband connectivity to 400 residential and commercial lots. Fibre coupled with Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) equipment was used in most cases but to for multi-tenant buildings with existing copper cabling, NEC’s VDSL applied.

Other services including standard telephone and free-to-air television can also be delivered through the network.

OptiComm general manager, Phil Smith, said this was the first time GPON has been employed at a business park scenario and highlighted future opportunities at the University Hill site.

“We have 400 properties confirmed at the moment but there is a potential for 3000 more building blocks for that precinct” he said. “

The wholesaler has already begun working on deploying broadband networks in other estates, including Alamandor Grand Park at Point Cook in Melbourne and Parkridge in Sydney.
