3 unveils mobile Wi-Fi connection

Multiple devices can access web using wireless modem

Mobile network 3 has revealed it is planning to launch a mobile Wi-Fi service in the UK before Christmas.

MiFi is a wireless modem that emits a Wi-Fi signal that devices can connect to, ensuring access to the web from anywhere that is covered by 3's 3G network, without the need for cables or USB ports.

The wireless modem measures 86x45x10mm and allows multiple Wi-Fi connections at the same time. The first time a device connects to the wireless modem, the user will have to input an eight-digit network key. From then on the device will automatically connect with the modem.

"There are millions of Wi-Fi devices out there, but they can only be used in fixed locations. Consumer demand for easy and affordable internet access on the go is growing fast and we're responding to that by announcing the UK's first wireless modem," said Marc Allera, sales and marketing director at 3 UK.

Pricing for MiFi has yet to be released.
