Websense to cut 5 percent of staff

About 70 jobs will be cut

Citing tough economic times, security vendor Websense plans to trim 5 percent of its workforce.

"The recession has continued, and based on our outlook for the second half of the year it is now necessary for us to take additional measures to reduce expenses," said spokeswoman Katie Patterson in an e-mail.

Websense, which sells Web and e-mail security services, employs about 1400, so the reductions mean that about 70 people are losing their jobs. Patterson would not say where or when the cuts were coming.

The company sells software and services that filter Web and e-mail traffic for malicious traffic and protect corporate data.

Websense is based in San Diego, but has offices in England, China, Australia and Israel.

Although tech companies have been slashing jobs over the past year, the security industry has been relatively insulated from layoffs.

That's because while corporate IT spending in general has dropped, security spending has held steady.

Still, Websense isn't the only security company that has been forced to cut corners.

Late last year, Symantec trimmed just under 5 percent of its payroll spending.
