Apple takes unlocked iPhone 3GS online: Resellers' plight uncertain

Apple Australia has joined its US brethren in selling the iPhone through its online store.
In May, Apple’s Australian operations said the vendor was only selling the popular phone through its telco partners and retail stores.
However, since the release of the iPhone 3GS it is selling the device outright and unlocked off its online store. In the US, customers must have an AT&T plan to make the purchase online.
New additions to the family, the 16GB iPhone 3GS and the 32GB iPhone 3GS, are priced at $879 and $1040, respectively. Older brother, the 8BG iPhone 3G can be purchased for $719.
An Apple spokesperson could not disclose the exact date the sales program started but in a written response said the unlocked iPhone will only be sold through the Apple retail chain and the online store, effectively cutting resellers, which are partnered with telco carriers to sell locked iPhones, out of the loop.
Apple has four retail stores around the country: George St, Sydney; Chadstone, Victoria; Chatswood, NSW; and Robina, Queensland.

Apple resellers get smacked again
Apple's decision to sell the iPhone through its online store, without a telco plan attached, will certainly be welcomed by consumers, but it's a smack in the face for Apple's third-party resellers.
When the iPhone first came out, resellers were excluded from selling these devices unless they had a reseller agreement with one of the designated carriers. Given that the phone is now available as a standalone device, surely resellers should be given access to it? But yet again, Apple seems to have ignored its loyal channel base in favour of direct sales.
I'm surprised we haven't heard from more outraged Apple third-party resellers about this. But then again, perhaps the constant beating they've received from their vendor over recent years has taken its toll on morale.

Seems like Apple is running their old tricks. First making the market, letting the vendors do all the advertising then not giving them stock to sell and restricting sales only to their own retail shops. Anti competitive? You decide! Will the ACCC say anything? Doubtful, they are not up to it! Like the whole saga with fixed price ipods but large bonus' to retailers who sell more than 5 units- effectively fixing the price for consumers.
