Legal advisors sought for NBN implementation study

The Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy is looking to appoint a primary legal services advisor and associated panel of providers

The Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy is looking to appoint a primary legal services advisor to assist with the national broadband network (NBN) implementation study.

Tender documents state the department will also create a non-exclusive NBN legal services panel to perform transactional work.

The NBN implementation study is being undertaken to “determine the operating arrangements and detailed network design of the NBN, ways to attract private sector investment and ways to provide procurement opportunities for local businesses", the tender documents stated.

It is to be completed in early 2010.

The study will be overseen by a steering committee that is made up of representatives from the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, the Department of Finance and Deregulation, the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Treasury and once appointed, the chairman of NBNco.

The primary legal services advisor and the panel will provide services in: Communications law; company and general commercial law; intellectual property; property law; and construction law.

The tender closes July 20 with the panel and primary legal advisor expected to start work on August 3 until March 31, 2010.

The NBN tender comes on the back of the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) opening a tender to create a new panel of IT hardware and related service providers.

Other recent Federal Government tenders include an Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) $450,000 tender seeking offers for an Information Technology Desktop Asset Management (ITDAM) solution and an Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) tender seeking a service provider for a $200,000 Cisco telephony contract to boost its unified communications strategy.
