Fightback '09: Good news abates

New relationships and opportunities abound

It has been a busy week of good news with fresh channel partnerships, government contracts, increased demands for IT professionals and positive financial figures.

Hot on the heels of its fresh channel program, security vendor, Kaspersky Lab, picked upAnyware Computer Accessories as a platinum partner. The distributor’s marketing manager, Steve Grant, said becoming a top-tier partner allows Anyware to expand its offerings and gain ground in the security solutions sector.

Another big winner this week is systems integrator, SMS Management and Technology (ASX:SMX), which has snagged a 12-month contract with the Bureau of Meteorology for the Australian Water Resources Information System (AWRIS) project.

Phase one of the rollout is worth $2.5 million dollars. The company expects it to be a three-step implementation with each additional stage adding onto the base contract value. There is also an option for a two-year extension.

Continuing its hiring spree from last week, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) has opened a tender to lure mainframe technical specialists. Applicants must have an “extremely high level of experience and expertise with both mainframe and the ATO’s implementation of the supporting set of products”, according to tender documents.

Adding onto the good news for IT professionals is the latest Seek Employment Index (SEI), which showed that IT consultant positions were the fourth hardest roles to fill across the economy in May.Top three most difficult jobs to fill were taken by nurses, primary school teachers and private practice solicitors.

One company showing extreme resilience to the dour economy is JB Hi-Fi. The ASX-listed retailer has posted strong guidance figures for the full financial year and expects its net profit for the year ending June 30 to hit $92 million – a 41 per cent increase on the previous year.

Thankyou for continuing to defy the usual media "doom and gloom is fun to report" stereotype.
