NSC makes big bets on Sun

Communications integrator, NSC, has thrown its weight behind Sun Microsystems, establishing a new business practice that is expected to contribute a third of its annual revenue.

NSC has hired 22 staff to form the practice, which will be headed by former Sun Microsystems senior executive, Michael Salama. According to NSC managing director, Craig Neil, the investment is expected to reap $25 million in revenue in the first year.

“Establishing this practice was heavily calculated on our behalf. We measured ourselves against other Sun partners and see it as a good opportunity for us,” Neil said, adding NSC is a mid-$50 million business.

The integrator previously had five staff dedicated to the Sun business, with some multiskilled engineers. Neil said the partnership, which has been in place since 2008, had been doing well, especially in the desktop thin client arena.

NSC made the decision to form the new Sun team prior to its acquisition by Oracle. Neil said that while he was unsure how things would play out as Sun is integrated into Oracle, he welcomed the move.

“Oracle is a great organisation. We have Oracle integration capabilities but didn’t sell the solutions ourselves. Following the acquisition, we will be looking to broaden our relationship with it,” he said.

NSC also recently announced growth in its managed services practice and the appointment of Michael Clarkson to the position of national services manager.
