CeBIT: Event goes green with Computers Off power management certification

IT trade show, CeBIT, has raised the environmental bar, becoming Australia’s first event to achieve the Computers Off Australia Power Management certification.

As part of the certification CeBIT organisers developed a policy in cooperation with Computers Off Australia that will see all non-critical IT equipment shut down over night or when not in use over the 3 days of the trade show, which starts next week.

Computers Off Australia founder, Mark Winter, said as it was common for people to leave devices on overnight during trade shows, he wanted CeBIT to set a greener tone for the industry.

“Once the exhibit is finished and they are all packing up for the day all the devices they are displaying or whatever it may be, are to be shut down,” he said. “That complies with our power management certification.”

A team of Computers Off staff will be monitoring exhibitors’ adherence to the policy and will issue notices to those that do not comply.

“We won’t go out and name names or anything like that, but we basically want to enforce that policy and we will be going and talking to them and explaining that part of the exhibitor guidelines is that they must abide,” he said.

In a statement, CeBIT Australia's organiser, Hannover Fairs Australia managing director, Jackie Taranto, said the event should set a clear example for responsible use of IT and power consumption.

"One of our key themes at CeBIT Australia 2009 is how Green IT practices can not only be a worthy social goal in itself, but can also improve business efficiencies and lower energy and running costs in their own right,” she said in the statement.

Computers Off Australia is a not-for-profit Green IT education campaign and labelling initiative, developed to help reduce Australia’s IT carbon footprint.
