Symantec unveils new disaster recovery toolkit

The software vendor's new management software is targeted at datacentre enviroments

Symantec has unveiled a new disaster recovery software offering targeted at datacentre environments.

Veritas CommandCentral Disaster Recovery Adviser is an agentless management software for datacentre operation. The program assesses the application, server and storage environment within an IT infrastructure and can identify configuration risks within a disaster recovery process. It also features an automate remediation process by providing standard guidelines for the management tool.

The Disaster Recovery Advisor relies on Symantec’s database of over 3000 risk signatures associated with configuration faults. The vendor’s systems engineering manager, Paul Lancaster, said Disaster Recovery Adviser was designed to eliminate unknown configuration changes, which can endanger disaster recovery.

“In August 2008, we ran a disaster recovery survey and found 30 per cent of IT departments failed some sort of disaster recovery scenario due to either human error or configuration issues,” he said. “While human error can’t be helped, the software can fix these configuration errors.”

Lancaster said the product allowed Symantec to leverage all its disaster recovery toolsets and link back to other offerings such as patch management.

The Veritas CommandCentral Disaster Recovery Adviser retails at $US3000 per server regardless of how many virtual machines are running.
