iPrimus bolsters ADSL2+ coverage

Internet service provider (ISP), iPrimus, has broadened its ADSL2+ broadband reach across Australia.

Through a wholesale deal, iPrimus will be using Telstra’s 1200 ADSL2+ exchanges along with its 300 DSLAM exchanges, taking the total count to 1500. The coverage upgrade is focused mainly in metropolitan areas.

The move to expand ADSL2+ coverage was spurred by an increasingly competitive market and customer demand, according to iPrimus marketing and products general manager, Andrew Sims.

While existing ADSL customers are eligible to upgrade, the new service is offered at an increased price.

“Since the monthly cost we pay to Telstra is slightly higher, the retail cost to customers will also be higher on these services to cover the differential,” Sims said. “So in comparison to our standard plan at $32.95 on our own network, it is matched by the $69.96 which is the lowest plan you can get on the Telstra wholesale network.”

iPrimus also highlighted the coverage boost as a pre-emptive move to accommodate Australia’s impending National Broadband Network (NBN).

In a statement, iPrimus CEO, Ravi Bhatia, said the extension of coverage zones is a pre-cursor to a graceful NBN migration.

“We are absolutely behind the NBN,” Sims said. “Like most of our competitors, we are certainly thinking internally about what steps we can take to ready ourselves for when the NBN becomes a reality and what that would mean for us and our customers.”
