Symantec Backup Exec 12.5
Symantec claims Backup Exec 12.5 will provide expedient and cost-effective data and systems protection in both a physical and virtual environment. The software provides data protection for VMware Infrastructure, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and single console physical systems. Backup Exec also supports backup of an unlimited number of guest machines within a VMware ESX or Microsoft Hyper-V host environment to disc or tape from a single agent. Its support for virtualised platforms allow users to have a global view of their virtual environment. In addition, Backup Exec integrates Symantec’s patent-pending Granular Recovery Technology. Unlike traditional systems that demand multiple backups for granular recovery of fi les and entire virtual machines, Backup Exec allows for granular or image level via only one backup, reducing the recovery time and footprint of the backup on storage resources, the vendor claims. Using Backup Exec 12.5, administrators gain access to fl exible whole guest virtual system recovery including the ability to rename virtual machines and optional power-up guest machines following a restore.

EMC Celerra NS Series
The EMC Celerra NS Series uses de-duplication technology to delete repeated versions of the same data. EMC claims this improves power efficiencies and maximises storage capacity by reducing file system capacity by up to 50 per cent. The unifi ed storage system combines fi le-level retention and compliance capabilities with 99.999 per cent reliability, and can be used as an integrated system across distributed environments. It offers simultaneous support for NFS and CIFS protocols by letting Unix and Windows clients share files using the operating systems’s file locking mechanism, Data Access in Real Time (DART). Other features include FailSafe networking, link aggregation, VLAN tagging and antivirus integration. The vendor claims the Celerra series, the first NAS system with Enterprise Flash Drives (EFD), can deliver up to 800 per cent performance improvement compared with traditional Fibre Channel drives. The series also provides comprehensive management tools for VMware environments including VMware Site Recovery Manager Automated Failback, that can co-ordinate a failback to the original virtual infrastructure.
