Joe Serra has been made redundant at Samsung

Samsung monitors manager, Joe Serra, has been made redundant just over 12 months after returning to the vendor.

Sources close to the company told ARN Serra was one of up to seven staff being cut across Samsung’s IT division. It is understood other cuts include a NSW state manager and commercial business development manager.

At this stage, it is unclear why the redundancies have been made. However, the news comes just weeks after Samsung appointed former BenQ Australia’s managing director, Phil Newton, as director of IT.

Serra was unavailable for comment.

Serra returned to Samsung in January 2008, following its decision to retrench general IT manager, Norm Krieke. At the time, the vendor attributed the change to a restructure of its IT operations and management tier.

Serra spent several years with Samsung as national IT sales manager, before quitting in December 2006 to join Panasonic’s professional AV/IT division.

Samsung had not returned requests for comment at time of press.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.

Could be the tip of the iceberg

Samsung's business has gone backwards in the past 12 months, so its not a surprise.

Its about time Samsung got their business in order and got rid of the cowboys that have worked their over the years. I've frustrating sold Sasmung screens for years and have never even seen Joe Serra yet Ive seen Newton numerous times and he seems to understand the our needs quite well. Hats of to Samsung for once

Samsung? - direction?

I don't know about the previous commentary about Joe Serra but I've been doing business with Samsung for many years myself and I've always found Joe to be a stand-up guy and a man of his word...all I've heard about the new director is that he'll cut anyone a deal...don't know if he's of the same ilk...can safely say that I'll be looking at other vendors now.

Who better to steer Samsung into oblivion than the same captain of the sinking BenQ? We stopped buying BenQ projectors because of him, we wont be buying anything from Samsung while he's in control

NECq

NEC pulled out of the market ages ago... Sounds like another Newton basher to me. MMT, Synnex, Ingram & Altech cant be wrong. Newton turned BenQ around when it truely was a dog, lets hope he can do the same for Samsung.

As for jobs for the boys... have you seen how tall Newton is... no Korean would hire a guy twice as tall as them unless the guy was sh*thot!!!!

Lets see how many of you slam this decision 12 months from now. I'm all for it.

Samsung need to learn the hard way....

Wasn't Newton the same guy who sunk Mitsubishi Electric (monitors) and then jumped to Benq? Ironically, isn't Benq now a sinking ship?? In 12 months from now, Samsung will be a shadow of its former past and I sense a 3rd call will be made to Joe to come back and fix it (again).

Its funny that when Serra came back half the disties didn't want to deal with him. So now with Newton on board, does that mean that now because the distribution network is stuffed, Samsung will follow the paths of BenQ and Mitsubishi and deal direct? A leopard doesn't change his spots.

Deal or No Deal

Im hoping Samsung has a great deal for me as month end is approaching...based on most of the comments below, I'd be insane to just purchase at normal rates.

New Business Practice

I dealed with Phil Newton while he was working in BenQ, he is the guy who take care of his resellers and business partners. There must be a business concern for him or Samsung top management to cut Joe.

Besides, It looks like that Samsung is getting serious about IT, I would be interested to see what the channel strategy they would adopt in Q2 and Q3 to extend their current business
