Lenovo awarded NSW DET netbook contract

Microsoft also selected as the preferred software platform provider of state's mini-laptop rollout

Lenovo and Microsoft will provide 220,000 netbooks to NSW school students under the Department of Education and Training’s $110 million mini-laptop tender.

Under the arrangement, Lenovo will supply 220,000 IdeaPad S10e laptops to school students in years 9-12. The machines feature advanced network security and remote management tool. They also include theft protection features such as hardware level reporting, retrieval and remote disabling functions and RFID tagging.

Lenovo was shortlisted against five other contenders for netbook deal: Acer, ASI, Asus, Dell and HP.

“Lenovo firmly believes that technology is the key to the learning success of all students in Australia which is why we are delighted to announce our partnership with the New South Wales Department of Education and Training” Lenovo managing director, Phil Cameron, said in a statement.

Microsoft has been chosen as the preferred platform, which includes the Windows operating system and Office productivity suite. The software giant will also supply the software, licensing and support to enable NSW DET to manage the netbook deployment and upgrade.

In a statement, Microsoft managing director, Tracey Fellows, said through the partnership, students could access tools designed to help them get the most out of school while providing teachers with ability to provide a highly productive learning environment.

Microsoft education director, Neil Jackson, said it worked with a number of industry and OEM partners to position Microsoft’s tools and technologies.

“I think this is the first step in the transformation of education and Microsoft’s role in that we’ve been able to demonstrate the value of the Microsoft platform, moving forward it’s a vehicle for teaching and learning in the classroom as students leave for the workforce,” he said.

The Windows operating systems include XP and Vista along with the Office operating suite involving Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The units will also run Microsoft Groove, OneNote, Visual Studio and security products such as Forefront.

Channel partners will also have an opportunity to engage with Microsoft on the NSW DET deal in terms of providing solutions that will work in a teaching and learning context and deploying the technology, Jackson said.

“The opportunities are quite broad,” he said.

Adobe has also been confirmed as a supplier and will provide Photoshop Elements, Premiere Elements, Dreamweaver and Flash.

The netbook tender was announced last year as part of the Federal Government’s digital education revolution and will see year 9-12 secondary students allocated computing devices. The devices must weigh no more than 1.75kg, be smaller than an A4 sheet of paper, have a minimum screen size of 8.9-inches, be capable of enabling voice and video communication, and cost less than $500.

What a complete waste of taxpayers money - most kids already have access to a computer at home. These underpowered Netbooks wont be much use apart from messenger, facebook and porn. They are too slow to have parental controls working affectively.
Watch for them to appear on Ebay soon - sorry it was stolen as the excuse :(
This is a rediculous ongoing cost that the nation cannot afford. Let alone Lenovo being able to provide the huge warranty support required. There is simply no fall back position if this fails and giving it to only one supplier is simply foolish.
Another big plus for China - Rudd will be pleased :(

Well i agree but not everyone has a laptop, and desktops are certainly not moved with ease like laptops, or more in particular netbooks which are weigh like, close to nothing

What a waste, when a small Virtualised desktop environment would have worked from the PC at home. No Notbook to carry, support or maintain- no virus management from out of hours surfing..it could have been a great strategy. If only they (Govt and Public Servants) would do their jobs, and not try to be IT experts as well, we may have had a chance!! Taxpayers money slips away again.

what is their problem

well firstly, tis could have been a great idea. students with laptops is a good idea. but when they bought lenovo into it, it screwed up. i mean i have lenovos in my school. they are slow, laggy, not user friendly and look really bad. if they are willing to spend some money at least give the choice of mac to the pro-apple students like me. now the school will force us to use certain software that are only on the lenovo. too bad. im stickin to mac. not using lenovo.

I have a question for the Department of Education. I am in year 11 and dont get one of these new laptops. My question is while the people in Year 10, 11 and 12 dont have these laptops do they have to suffer because the Department of Education wont put the new unreleased Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2007???

Some questions need to be answered...

I think that instead of issuing students these laptops, they could give us some sort of stimulus package for student laptops, that way we can purcahse our own laptops suitable for us and is better for our economy ;)

This will be HILLARIOUS.
I

This will be HILLARIOUS.
I mean seriously. I'm in year 8, and It took me half an hour to hack the school PC, only thing left to combat is the DET filter. They made a petty attempt at disabling CMD, but they didn't disable batch files. and these school laptops, Can't we just ophcrack them from a USB-connected DVD-drive, then use the admin account to system restore the PC and shove windows 7 on them? free laptop :D
I've already seen one, and the desktop layout is horrible and cluttered, and it's quite laggy. My only real concern is that I've heard that even from home internet, it's still DET filtered. Hoping this isn't true.

You're a fool. First rule of hacking-You can never ever be too paranoid. Don't post how you hacked the netbooks up here..coz then theyll disable it. The people who havent got it yet will get it wit bat files disabled *aka* well be screweed through the roof. And btw, I believe Windows 7's lsass.exe is well equipped to deal with ophcrack and similar programs (FYI-lsass stores your password and thats what ophcrack attacks.;I think cain & abel can get through though...I've hacked my sister a couple of times

This is ridiculous.

I dont know why year 10, 11 or 12 arent getting these.
these are the years that are very pressuring on us and we dont seem to be getting any aid.
while year 9 is getting these laptops, we see 10, 11 and 12 suffering. Many of us do not have acess to computers.
also, why laptops? why couldnt the PM just give is the software? that would have made it easier. Software is so expensive, subsidising these things or just giving them out would have been better than spending hundreds of millions of dollars on laptops that will eventually be hacked or broken/ stolen.
Lenovo is crap.

This forum highlights

I gathered, from reading the comments of the students on this forum, that many of them don't know how to spell and have no grasp of the proper use of grammar. Furthermore, look at them asking tax payers to "give them laptops". My parents had to pay for mine in high school and these children expect them to pay again for theirs. Whether you use a Mac or a Windows based PC has no impact on whether you can add, subtract, read & write. Learn to do those things first and then, potentially, you might be half-deserving of a notebook computer.

I find it really quite interesting...

I find it really quite interesting that all of the "younger" posters of previous comments seem to lack any semblance of ability to use the English language!

I think that the funding for these netbooks would be better served by being used to fund teaching of more effective spelling and grammar.

What a joke!

EYES

These kids eyesight are going to die before you know it. Staring at a very small screen for the whole school day wont be nice.

And a big waste of money for the constant replacements as they get stolen/lost/damaged and cost of providing them to new yr9's constantly and also the cost of the electricity going to run them and the cost of the (eye) health effects.

Kevin Rudd and his ill-thought out expensive plans. I doubt school grades will change at all because of the laptops, most students already have access to their own home computer which is probably better then these ones anyway.

The govternment should've really rolled the laptops out to years 11 and 12. By the time this years year 9 reaches year 12 the technology in the laptops will be out of date and unable to run software fast. The computers will probably be very slow by 2012, after all the games and stuff that students will have on them by then. Year 11 and 12 would have benefited greatly by them. I am in year 11 doing software design and development and i don't even have a good computer.

Agree

Yes, I agree, the government should support those students who are studying for & completing their HSC. And, as for the technology, hey, they're Windows-based computers, therefore they already can't run the programs fast enough for proper use, even though they're brand new, no need to wait three years for them to slow down. Honestly, if the government was going to do this properly, they would've forked out the extra for Macs & only supplied years 11 &/or 12 with them. That way they'd only be for the students that are serious about their education. You mentioned that you are doing software design, my mum is currently studying a similar field at Uni & told me that they don't even look side-ways at Windows due to their lack of performance & reliability, & Macs are all they use. What better way of preparing year 11 & 12s for the future then supplying them with Macs, that way, especially within your field of study, the laptops could actually be used for something useful after year 12, instead of instantly becoming more landfill, just as the pathetic Lenovo ones will.
That way, supporting dedicated students, as well as mildly reducing the amount of plastic waste.

I'm in year nine & am receiving one of these laptops next term, & even i think the government's 'Digital Education Revolution' is ridiculous.

just no!

The only reason these aren't going to be adequate is because people like you will break, NOT because they are running windows get your own point of view and take more than just what your mummy told you before coming and slandering a decision like the one to use Windows. I'm not saying i agree with all the decision that where made with this roll out in fact i don't agree with a lot of them but the one i do agree with is to not use a mac platform!

45

Anonymous

Fri 25/09/2009 - 21:48

oh really?

Oh, you know me do you? Obviously not, because i AM someone who takes care of my belongings, my laptop will NOT be broken. Yes, I do agree with you that they will break regardless of whether the platform is Mac or Windows, but that is just due to the physical manufacturing quality of the machines. Whereas my previous post was ONLY based on the quality of the operating systems. Get my own point of view you say? I have my point of view, I like Macs better, not because 'Mum Said So'. I have one myself, as well as a Windows laptop. It took a week for the Windows laptop to slow down to a pathetic speed, with literally no other programs other than stock-standard. But on the other hand, all three Macs, we've had for years, with plenty of applications & you barely notice any slowing what so ever. The main reason why I had stated that Macs would be a better alternative is that they are a LOT more reliable & WILL stand the test of time. No, they are not perfect, but in MY opinion they are not far off it. If they want students to be able to have these laptops for the rest of their school years without being slower than the government themselves & actually be able to run the programs included with the machine from day one, then.....Mac.

Ok, so you agree that Macs are not a good option, right? Why not? I would love to hear your opinions about this subject.

Only Year 9 gets laptops?

this is bullshit. i'm in year 10 and we get nothing just cos we're in the year above. The stupid year 9's don't even deserve them. once they find a way (and they will) to hack it and open any program and go on any website all they will do in class will be playing games and going on myspace.

The laptops should be given to all year 11 students imo (most year 12's should have a laptop or at least a decent PC at home right now), considering they actually need to work for something (prelims and HSC) and are more likely to use them properly.

How many kids do you think will drop out of Year 10 with these laptops? huh? never thought of that, did you Rudd.

On a positive note....

My sister just received one of the DET netbooks, and in my professional opinion (formed after more than a decade of IT experience) I am fairly impressed.

The Lenovo S10 machines have a better build quality compared to most netbooks, and the software build that the DET techo's have shipped the machines with is quite solid. Colour me pleasantly surprised that they shipped the machine with Windows 7 Enterprise!

Now all we need is to get the kids to stop trying to "hack" the bloody things, and get them to concentrate on using them to better their education!

Well, that's my 2 cents worth... flame away! :)

Ungrateful

I've sat here reading these posts and all I can think of, is how many ungrateful people there are. You have been priveleged to receive a laptop to educate yourself on, not play games.

As someone in my 30s, I think today's society is being ruined by gadgets and games and I'm happy that these laptops are locked down. It's a shame that children of today have a constant requirement to abuse the things they are given.

Back when I was at school, it was a privelege to receive technology, not a given. Too much stuff is just being given to kids who don't appreciate it or understand the value of this, we should be more focused on providing this technology to 3rd world countries and even in outback Aus, not to ungrateful brats who just want to hack it and play games...

I think this is just a waste of money which is going to be abused as can be seen already by some of the posts. We're going to have a generation of kids with eventual poor eyesight, overweight from inactivity, inability to communicate naturally with others, a disregard to language and spelling (courtesy of Microsoft), speech issues, such a shame...

Anonymous yr 9

Sat 03/10/2009 - 19:13

sigh...

Hmm, i agree that these laptops should go to better use, but i want to clear a lot of things up -

If you drop out, you don't keep the laptops. You have to complete year 12 to keep them (while we are in possesion of them, they're not ours yet). Also, someone said "how do I hack exe files?" thats not really hacking, but you can right click the exe then run as administrator - why am i saying this? i don't know. Also, in 2 and a half years time, we'll be doing the HSC. They want us to stay in school, without making it look to obvious. They couldn't give it to those already in yr 11 and 12 because they thought that anyone could just go into a public school just for yr 12 stay for like 3 terms, do the HSC, there you go, you just got a free (albeit -low quality-) laptop.

Also, to that kid in yr 10 that said we don't deserve them; you're right, no point arguing, but DON'T BLAME US YOU IDIOT! It's not like we get everything we ask for, ok, they gave it too us, we didn't specifically ask for it, its not our fault you guys missed out, i'm very sorry.

P.S. Don't call us stupid, based on the fact that we got a laptop, and you didn't, thats very very immature of you.

And lastly, before you even think about wasting your most important years of education trying to hack and play games, have you considered just waiting 3 years, until they take the locks off the laptops? Hacking is hard, and takes a lot of knowledge. You're going to fail miserably, and when i comes to the HSC, your going to make us look really bad. So just wait, because either way, you're only going to get an unblocked laptop in thress years time, but if you avoid the temptation, you'll still find your education was worthwile. Wow, cmd is not blocked? yea, good luck, you'll need it.

Also, in relation to programs, it comes with almost every educational related program (Adobe, office '07 + more) so that if you ever do like multimedia, or digital imaging, you'll have the required programs (it was otherwise hard to do homework, if any at home). I just don't understand the fact that these so called custom made laptops still have MSN (blocked) and iTunes (if you have any movies you get like a 1-2 hr detention after school, as for music, they don't seem to care at all; why?)

52

Some (most, generally in my school) are really grateful for these, we were one of the first to get them. Not every single yr 9 is trying to hack them though, but im not saying that the idea doesn't come across my head every so often. It is annoying how 99.5% of websites are blocked, so no point doing any type of research (unless - we crawl into the dark corner of the WWW, that is, Wikipedia, in which many things are STILL blocked). It's these things, like unprepared for lessons (teachers have less blocked sites than us, so its annoying for teachers to find out that the website on which the whole lesson may be based on is blocked on students laptops) that add those extra minutes into each lesson, and what can you do? Naturally, some are going to play games, some will attempt to hack. Just one taste, and you're already addicted. Why not just play games for the whole lesson? Thats a good idea. Eventually, every lesson is just a game or two of counter strike or flash games, and this is the digital Education Revolution?

Sat 03/10/2009 - 20:28

sigh... (Part 2)

I'm back again, just to clear some more things up -

If you're in year 6 right now, you will be recieving a laptop, althogh if you get the same one as us (lenovo s10) i really do feel sorry for you, because it is really slow. Sell it on eBay after year 12, for hypothetically speaking, $250 (if you're lucky), save up $750 of your own money, and buy a laptop that can play actually use microsoft word without lagging for 5 minutes every time you try to paste a small picture in, or type at a slightly faster than normal speed.

If u think we cant spell cos we type like this, well then ur just misunderstanding us. Of course we can spell properly, it's just we have the brain power to switch between social text, and normal text. Don't think that just cuz some (most nowadays) of us think its sooo cool to type like this, doesn't mean that the youth of today has completely lost the english language.

Also, i've noticed some people talking about taxes. On a completely unrelated topic, isn't it kind of unfair to just keep spending (e.g. I don't understand pensioners, whats superannuation for if you get pension, please explain to me, no one teaches you this stuff in school, please excuse my harshness) then expect the later generations to pay off the debt? In another decades time, i heard we will be paying the highest tax ever seen, yet when we're older, we get no pension (even though it is a pretty small amount to live on, but better than nothing)? We do get a laptop however...so uh, that evens thing out right rudd?

54

press start, search cmd and open it
when the black screen comes up type
gpupdate/force
you dont have to restart or log off.
there now you owe me a proxy for ueuo. my email is donedat2@hotmail.com so just send me the link when your done. ty

...

I am in year 10 and about to go into year 11, it's pretty obvious that most of the kids that have commented on this page are basically junkies and arseholes who just wanna waste their time on redtube at school and are lost in the world of education and they seriously have no hope of becoming anything more than a worker at hungry jacks for the rest of their lives. I have been lucky enough to be given a scholarship and i will be recieving one of these laptops although I strongly believe it should only be handed out to students in year 11 and year 12 as these students are the ones that are at school to learn! they are heading in the right direction not wasting their time wanting to look at porn at school

IT admins did not come down in the last shower...

It's absolutely hilarious that these school kids think that they know better than the IT admins.... Of course they're going to know if you're using the machine fo purposes other than what you're supposed to - the machines are loaded with enterprise-grade security software!

Not to mention the fact that the network administrators have been working in IT for more than a few minutes!

just you know a pointer to all you older students.
you do realize that we will have to do our hsc at one point?
and if anyone got them during
it would waste precious time studying for your hsc trying to work a bloody laptop out?
there giving them to us because it means we have enough time to actually figure a way to learn with them before they stuff up our educations.
and of course we wanna hack em. were 14/15 year old's what the hell do you expect??
the internet on there has pretty much zero usage due to the fact you cant even look up stuff about the American Indians because its blocked.
they should really look into that.
most people are hacking out of desperation cause they finally get there laptops and the internet on it is useless.
stop ripping up the year nines just cause you don't get a free laptop. no use calling us assholes when your going off on the internet like a toddler having a bloody tantrum..

A Reminder

Just Remember that After you finish Year 12 the Image of Windows 7 or Whatever is on them at the time gets wiped. You end up with a blank HDD. There is no removing of locks or anything. Just a clean and easy format. Also remember that the school you go to has it's own proxy, so it is practically impossible to get to blocked websites. Believe me I hate this as much as anyone else, I just thought i would remind everyone.

.EXE

To run any exe, simply run it as administrator.

You dont need a password or anything

I dont think you can install games though, just copy the entire installed game across to your laptop and run the .exe

ive got WC3, doom 2 and quake working, as well as firefox

RE: Ungrateful

Yes, there are many ungrateful people.

But my issue is truer and worth reaading.

The department has blocked the internet. Good initiative, no-one should be playing games in class. However there is a program called "your freedom" that avoids proxies. It has successfully unlocked WOW, DOTA, Facebook, youtube, MSN and many other things to the poor students. However it is good that most students don't know the settings needed for the program to work, one which I won't explain.

Not only this, but most flash games can be downloaded on PCs and loaded onto the laptops unblocked, which is what is happening now. Games are being played during classtime right in front of the oblivious teachers

Secondly, the DET has set out group policy to block .exes to stop students playing games. Unfortunately, this initiative FAILED to stop students playing .exe games. all it takes is two extra clicks for an .exe to run.(selecting "run as admin")

So instead of blocking games, it has blocked the more intelligent things, like programming. I spend 80 minutes each day on trains, and I would love to see myself making programs, games and learning tools for myself during my seated times than do nothing and watch others play games on their laptops. unfortunately, there is a technical reason as to why compiling (or making) programs is impossible due to the DET's restrictions, one which I assume you wouldn't understand.(please notice the word "assume")

Programming is a very intelligent skill, one that is undoubtly extremely useful in the digital world. It is creative, mind boggling, and most of the time very productive. but the DET blocked it like a blocked nasal passage.

What is more interesting is how easy it is for the DET to unblock .exes, and to bring the laptops to their full potential. All it takes is one IT person and a few minutes, it doesn't cost any money and it doesn't ruin the economy.

I am very greatful of the laptops (surprise, surprise) however I shun those who abuse it and I deeply hate the .exe block for reasons that I think the DET would appriciate. (Eg it failed to block games but instead blocked intelligence and creativity)

Laptops

Guys, you are all guinea pigs. We are all watching what you do so when they roll out to other years we can block even more stuff.

One teacher [in pilot] program took his to New Zealand via air and the DET contacted the principal asking if they knew where it was. Yes it has a GPS.

It is also a Blue steel machine which means they can bring up your desktop at any time and look at your HD and desktop wallpapers etc.

At our school we have smart board software that shows all computers connected on a main computer so we can see what you are doing..

Big Brother will just keep watchi and controlling. Be thankful you have a really big word processor and MP3 Player

Useless

I got one of these DET Netbooks somewhat last term. Seriously, these things haven't enhanced our education, they've merely corrupted it. As I speak, I see about 3 people in front playing games, 2 watching movies and another trying to hack it (failing though).

All the computer did is was made the periods bludge lessons. Also, weren't we fine without these laptops before? Woulda saved a lot of money, which we could have used for better reason.

If you REALLY want to make use of these netbooks, stop trying to hack it and use it for educational use. These netbooks were given to you as a gift.

Well that's my rage moment.

the answer

you dont have to be a genious to unblock any site you want and to use msn messenger...
i was stuffing around with my new laptop after i got it because all the blocked sites were annoying me,sites for school work were even blocked.
so i went into control pannel, opened system and security, clicked network and internet then internet browsing, then advanced up the top, then ticked all those boxes thats were unmarked and pressed ok.
worked for me and my mates.

Good one ... At least learn what is and isn't possible. I can tell you right now, anybody who actually believes for one second that these machines have a GPS inbuilt is clearly not the brightest of soles. The only way in which they could have tracked this machine in NZ is through the Internet.

Second point is that there is no such thing as Blue Steel... At least try something realistic such as using a real program name such as DameWare mini remote control or RealVNC etc etc.

Third point is that Smart Boards are actually just a teaching aid, all they allow you to do is demonstrate to the class, write on the board, use the software for teaching purposes... they do not have the ability to connect to a server which can view what the machines are doing...

Big brother is watching, yes, but not from the classroom, from head office.

Okay seriously. I've had a laptop for ALL my years of high school so far, and the first we had (since year 7) was going to finish in year 9 so we can breathe the fresh air of paper and pen again.

But no, we get these government laptops right in the middle of year 9.

I honestly don't care about laptops anymore at school; we're the technology generation and this is what the government feeds us. Just suck it up and USE THEM. I don't care if you hack, study, play games or watch vids. If you had paper, you'd still be doing that amount of school work. It's not like we have a choice anymore.

If you guys want to use your breath on something, rally against the idea that of doing our HSC on laptops. HSC ON LAPTOPS. Are you kidding me?

Stop '09 Year 9s being the guinea pigs, tell them to do it to the Year 7s or something but NOT US.

Get A Life!

Get over it! Different times require different attitudes and these times require understanding attitudes! For one, you say that we have a disregard for language and spelling, yet, you can't even spell priviledge! I seem to be spelling quite well. And my language seems to be in check. And I'm certainly not overweight! How dare you blame technology for our increasing child obesity! Have you ever heard of a WiiFit Board... Or an EyeToy Play? They both encourage us 'children' to get up and move. And there are plenty of TV shows that encourage healthy eating and exercise habits. DFon't blame technology for society's faults. Another thing, if you were a Year 9 student using you laptop for an internet research assessment, as I currently am, and having to resort to something as unreliable as Wikipedia because all the trusted, informative websites were blocked? You tell me if you'd try and find a proxy? Or jump up and down in front of an IT person? So don't think we're spoiled brats!!

Are these laptops really needed? Or could the money be put to better use? Like helping with funds to rural schools.. Or lowering the price of university and tafe etc. I understand that times are changing and computers are a big part of our society now, but what happened to the good old fashioned text book, pen and paper?

Most households these days have atleast one decent computer, so is it really needed for the students at school?

Uh, how're you supposed to boot off a disk without a disk drive, genius? you could do it off USB, but you can't access the BIOS.

I can't belive they tried to call these laptops "unhackable". Hah, that just means a challenge to people our age! It is really annoying that they've blocked as many sites as they have, but thats easy enought to get past. What I think is sad is that people are trying to unblock facebook and msn. Is it really so terrible that you can't talk to your friends in another class? You wouldn't have been able to anyway if you'd never been given the laptops.

Also, using the fact that you get to keep it after year 12 s an incentive to finish school is stupid, too. They're powerrful for netbooks, but netbooks aren't very powereful, and at the rate technology is advancing, they're going to be waaayyyyy out of date by the time we finih high school in 3 years.

Siway.com/Site/Proxy i always use that whenever i feel bored... i can use ebuddy or any sites that is blocked...but everytime u put a site in that website u have to put letter "m" in the very beginning... example: m.ebuddy.com don't put www..... and remember always delete your history because they can find it out through your history, and once they found out about it, they'll make it block...

go to internet
at the top, click the tab that says tools
then click internet options
then click the advanced tab
then click the reset button and keep clicking okay or yes until you get a message which says you need to restart your internet page or whatever
close the internet pages and re open a new one
your internet should work

Help

I don't want to bacome a hacker. I only want to access the messenger site so I can get it working. This looks promising, but I don't want to try it without knowing how to delete history.

If anyone has a quick and easy way to do this, and can explain in easy english (I don't understand techniqual terms), please tell me.

To an DET people reading this, I'm not a hacker, but it's your fault that I have to resort to these measures. Sorry.

Personall, I think the DET should just open that one site so we can get it working.

Otherwise, it's just some sick, cruel joke put in by the DET.

No one's that mean, are they?

To the person from the "New South Whale Department Of Education and training", it is pretty obvious that you are not someone from there, or close to there. Your spelling and grammar is atrocious and how can you even call yourself as someone that works there?

no, for one taking a pic of you when u open it is illegal and also would take up alot of memory for the det. thats lyk over 500,000 pictures every day. to look at one by one. lol, and also thay can not see all of your files and watch any of your videos, but they can see logs of your files, (in other words they can see the names of all the files and their extentions e.g. .exe .mp3 .mov, so on) so things that you dont want them to see, just name it something completley random.

What's the point of distrubuting laptops to every 9-12 grader in Australia? What ever happened to those government ad's trying to encourage people to get out and be active? Although the laptops do a great job of shutting everybody up in class, I've noticed. All the kids seem to be so absorbed in the game they're playing or the movie they're watching. The teacher's assume we're all doing our work. I'm sure DET will discontinue this method of learning as soon as every 9th grader has done their HSC and the results come out a lot lower than now days.
If they haven't noticed already, technology is already taking over and ruining our lives. Soon every person in the universe will be able to hack everything and anything, it's all just a matter of time. Before you know it, we'll be starting to raise kids who each own a phone, computer, laptop and ipod at the early ages of maybe 7 or 8.
I guess it wasn't a very smart choice of theirs.
I'm a 9th grader by the way.

MSN Windows Live Help

Who's to say that all year 9 students are foul-mouthed idiots who cannot speak to anyone without using vulgur cursing language? Some of us are here for proper help, not to bad mouth the DET or whoever runs the show around here.

I really think that it's stupid for the DET to put Windows Live Messenger onto our laptops and then not have the decency to allow us to use it. I only planned on using it to talk to my best friend who is leaving the country next year and I really don't want to lose contact with her...

So for any DET people looking at this, I beg you to let us run the Live Messenger Update site. I don't need anything else on the site. Just the Windows Live Messenger Update page. You can even set it up on your site and let us download it from there without un-blocking the rest of the site. Please?

IF anyone else can tell me how to get it working, I shall be forever greatful. Please Help Me!

I can't lose her...

Reply to "do we really need them?"

They come with a lot of programs that are quite helpful. You are obviously in need of some proper grammar yourself.

I don't see what the problem is with spell-check.. It tells you when you have spelled something incorrectly, does it not? Would you rather just make the mistake, or make the mistake and be notified ASAP about it?

If the teachers were actually doing their job and watching over the class and teaching then there would be no problem with people only playing games and doing no work. If a student is caught playing games, the teacher's can confiscate the laptops. Teacher's can also compromise - Work first, games if you have finished and your work is completed to a satisfactory/decent level.

I have not seen any huge issues with the laptops regarding internet at my school. We can even access the WiFi in the playground.

If you think that we do not need them, then that is your opinion. IMO, I think they are great. Despite the websites being blocked, they can be quite handy. I prefer typing to writing, I feel as though I can communicate better, and everything gets done quicker.

As for everything being blocked.. The government and NSW DET is just under-estimating and doubting us. They are also making the assumption that we would just go on sites that are inappropriate. Fair enough though, there are always some douches that would do that.

If you have a computer at home, with MSN, Facebook etc - Then why are you complaining about not having them on our laptops? They are, after all, for school work.

148

Anonymous

Wed 30/12/2009 - 23:57

honestly,

DET should at least work out something that will let you access MSN after school hours.

I understand that some of the reasons are to do with cyber-bullying etc but even if you do block msn/facebook/myspace and such, it wont stop those problems because it wont stop the kids from getting on their phones and home pc's/laptops and becoming involved in this activity.

Also, i think it's stupid that these students are getting suspended and punished for trying to access(hack) into MSN, it's been put on their laptops, so why cant they use it? Don't you think it's just encouraging this behaviour?

Thankyou

Kevin Rudd Needs a Financial Manager!

Honestly, spends a billion here, a billion there...and what have we to show? 15 yr olds with tiny crappy laptops. Kevin Rudd has put Australia right back into a financial crisis and everybody thinks "isn't this new Prime Minister great? He has given all these kids laptops, all these people stimulus packages and sent politicians on a well deserved break." Yeah well, sorry to break it to you people, your taxes will rise and you will be thinking "oh, I wonder why".

John Howard put Australia in a great financial position and then Labor gets power and bam! We're all in debt once again. Do you see any other countries spending a pointless $5000 on a laptop for tens of thousands of students? No, I don't think so. Money could be so much better spent on infrastructure and making Australia's recreational and physical life so much better. Schools already have computers so why give each student an individual one when they also have their own at home? dumb dumb dumb. The Education Department need a good kick up the bum. Australia's education is terrible and they think giving students a cheap slow ass laptop will raise grades? LOL.

Australia needs to compare themselves to a lot of other countries and stop thinking we are top of the food chain. We are not expanding or progressing at all. Everytime and new shopping center is building or renovations are occurring to a local shopping center, everybody wines and complains saying they don't like change and all this crap. Take a trip to Singapore and you will find out that we are living in third world. The amount of construction and work happening is unbelievable and the pace. Yes, they import workers but whats wrong with that? Why can't Australia? I watched a Mc'Donalds built and open in 3 days. It takes a week here to just put up bloody scaffolds.

I can go on forever. Please get Liberal back into power and change the Education system! Maybe take a tip from the genius Chinese who now are home to the country with the most billionares produced (I am not Asian). Funny we make fun of them and say they live third world.

Hope Rudd reads this sometime and good ridents.

I am on my laptop now. I am scared because there is big det people in the offices watching what i am typing at this very moment... watching, waiting, just for that little slip of the keyboard...

btw, one of the reason that lenovo gave them to year 9 students is the warranty only last 3 years.

Right now i feel like throwing it at the wall and getting on my ipod or a proper laptop because the keyboard is crap and the little mouse pad thingy cant be turned off when you type so every now and then you tap it! and cause an error.... and then when you try and backspace the error you press the '=' sign!!

i better not say any more or the little det people might get upset....

Get msn on your laptop working

1. Find msn on your start menu, right click on it, hit properties and change its compatability to windows 2000.
2. Open internet explorer and find connections and press LAN settings.
3. In the LAN settings menu, the first three boxes should be unticked and the last one shoud be ticked.
4. Change the proxy I.P. address to 218.101.6.204
5. Done! MSN should work. (Works for me!)
6. To stop internet explorer from spamming blocked website messages, run command prompt in admin mode.
7. Type in "qprocess" (without quotes) and look for the proxy clients PID number.
8. Type in "taskkill /pid "bluecoats proxy PID number".
9. Bluecot proxy client should now be terminated and internet explorer should now stop opening with blocked websites.

Why not take some time to value the opportunity given to you.
It is a learning tool given to students to use it during their high school studies. Although curriculam may not fully intergrated with Digital revolution, but i belive, it would be the aim for the future.
It is not worth spending / wasting time on researching about hacking and breakings.
We should manage our time with digital devices around us.
If we used to spend time on iphones, laptops, i-pads etc, no doubt that we will be facing big trouble during the exams.
It is our responsibilty to learn good us these devices than learning bad sides.
facebook,youtube,twitter,... you name it and count the hours we could waste on these devices.

The blocking 'run as administrator' thing is stupid, alot of the programs I was trying to run was helping my education (ie NOT games) and the teachers are annoyed because they were using a backing-up program that cant run anymore. And with the bluecoat thing, fair enough blocking Facebook, MSN etc at school but when we get home, we should be allowed to use it!!

About the laptops...

I got this laptop in 2009 and i am appalled at the lack of grace and appreciation form these remarkably lucky commenters.
These machines are surprisingly sophisticated pieces of hardware. While I can see the governments point of view on the subject, it is very cruel of them to dangle the golden carrot of gaming at school in front of us, so to counter this, here are a few simple suggestions.
1. While the ability to run as administrator has been "fixed" by the government, running the laptop in safe mode will fix this. But you still can't install any programs, because safe mode only runs vital drivers.
2. Want more leniency on the sites you can acces? Vibin' for some Youtube action?
All you need is a teacers FULL name from your primary school. (it helps if you knew them quite well/ which sports team they went for.)
When you open explorer on the school internet, type in some random stuff into the username bar, and keep pressing enter until you get redirected to a website where you can change your password. Type in the teachers name, and click "forgot my password", answer their secret question, and change their password.
This enables flash and Java script, and you will now get access to MANY more sites as well as you tube. (note: change the password every week or so and DON'T click remember credentials.)
Also, websites like Myspace and Facebook are still blocked......... unless you happen to know someone who has a TAFE password, because these babies pretty much get unrestricted access to sites.

Well... these are my tips, (not that you deserve them) all tried and tested by me, and if you get caught using these, (and you can get your laptop confiscated for the second one) it was not my fault.

P.S. Does anyone know how to update iTunes on the laptop? It keeps directing me to the apple website.

I think these laptops would be so much better if they were unblocked at home, and blocked at school. Hotmail is blocked, and i think its stupid. Hotmail would be a great way to send assignments to teachers instead of the portal.det, as nobody even uses them. It seems that they trust Google more then Microsoft. Lol.

i reckon that it is stupid how we cant use our normal websites at home, no viruses or anything can get in if our laptops have a firewall right? and when we are at home we cant really do research corresctly because most of the sites are blocked. and we arent using these laptops that much at school because teachers think it is a bad impact on our spelling and we hardly use them.

I'm in year nine, and I received my netbook a couple of weeks ago. The software is pretty good and there's some great programs on it. The battery life is alright and overall I think its an OK bit of machinery. I agree with many people on the fact that it's stupid that most sites are blocked at home. I agree on them being blocked at school as the sites are a distraction but they should give us a wee bit of freedom and unblock it after school hours.

183

>.<

Wed 09/06/2010 - 22:22

The only bad thing about these things is that nearly every site is blocked at home using your own net. fair enough if porn and that stuff is blocked but why did they block online games and other websites that aren't innapropiate?

184

concerned

Wed 09/06/2010 - 23:52

I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere and the laptops are a big advantage to our students, most of whom do not have a computer at home. As for the blocked sites, if the sites are truly for research purposes then the teachers at school can unblock them with a simple request or if they are lucky enough to have an IT officer allocated to their school that person can unblock them.

The laptops, when used properly by the staff at school can be a big advantage in the classroom too. They can be used for interactive lessons, distance education students can access these lessons and have the equal learning experience of those at school. They can also be used to learn about programs that might come in handy when at university or, shock horror, if you actually end up employed one day.

185

Arly

Thu 10/06/2010 - 14:55

Many of the commenters here seem to be focused on what they personally want from these netbooks, and not on what they were intended for, and who actually paid for them.

There is no question that the DET policies are not perfect and that they need some refining and tweaking, but foucus on the productivity aspects in getting changes done, not on which chat programs, games and whatever many students *want*...

These laptops are awsome and to all those people in year six, if K Rudd gets voted out you won't get your laptops because T Abbot is going to drop the plan. I have mine now and it makes everything so much easier. It is really quick and is easy to use the only problem is that there are a few kinks that need to be ironed out. I also agree with the people that said that some people do not deserve one. There are so many dero kids and all they do is put games on them and smash them. So all round fantastic computers.

191

:)

Sun 20/06/2010 - 14:06

I'm a comp eng student and my brother recently got one of these laptops. They are pretty good actually, however the various scare tactics they have put in place with the information nights and letters home etc. are hilarious.
I also find it funny that they have hidden C: when you can just access it from IE. Why bother hiding it in My Computer? >.<

Also, they rant on about how you're not allowed music, video, etc ... you can't install stuff on them, my brother has iTunes on his somehow (not sure if they come with them but if they aren't allowed music then wouldn't it make sense not to include iTunes?).

Anywho, wouldn't an easy way to bypass it to run a version of Linux that can be run from a flash drive/external HDD and then run games from that OS or would that not work?

I'm interested in getting these to do something they aren't allowed to; I don't believe this information should be restricted and personally, I think year 9's hacking it and finding out more about how the systems work should be encouraged. That's educational and it might motivate dero kids to actually learn something that will help them in life. :)

Of course, playing games in the middle of class is downright stupid - teachers will catch you, etc. However, if a teacher is to catch a student playing games, instead of punishing them they should be encouraged to develop their IT and software knowledge. Ever heard of trying to develop gifted and interested children/people rather than suppressing them and restricting information? That is what teachers are supposed to do! Encourage students to learn!

I think the interest a lot of kids have in hacking these laptops should be encouraged and taught. Knowledge in software systems and how computers work is extremely interesting and motivation to get into these industries and acquire this knowledge definitely SHOULD NOT be discouraged.
The whole ideal that 'hackers are bad' and people are bad for bypassing software systems is just implemented by computer illiterate fools and/or people who don't want society to develop.

If you (the year 11's and 12's) have time to complain on this website where the government wont listen anyways, you dont need a laptop, you should be studying remember; that is if you need one so bad? why are you comlaining, your using a computer to type this anyways.
Oh and to clear things up
Private schools get MACS
Government get LENOVO PC'S
Most things are blocked, and the only really useable things are itunes and photoshop. Flash games get around and so do movies, so there not COMPLETLY useless.
To keep the laptops you need to complete year 12
The laptop will be handed back to the school if you drop out in year 10. Most people try to hack and fail, best chances are find a proxy if your that desperate, even make one. The laptop roll-out will only be for 3 years, so 2009 year 9s 2010 and 2011 will receive one, then the government in that position will decide if the Digital revoution will continue. The laptops are monitered and have built in webcam that apparently can be watched which i totally disagree to webcam monitering, MSN wont work and other social networking is blocked, i dont take these laptops for granted but its not our choice to receive a laptop or not because if we didnt receive one, the others in the class will be working or playing games on the laptop, and we would just sit there; workless. So dont go around saying were brats and whatever, its not our choice, take it out on the government.

Start up a PXE network installation, either with a firewire (SD Slot one) Or through your local network. Install Backtrack 4, destroy schools network for the lulz. All done, the "unhackble" laptop is a failure in security. There's even a way to re-install windows without opening anything up and not needing a program. The site http://youtube.com/ is blocked. It has been classified in the category/ies Open/Mixed Content, Audio/Video Clips.

6.limewire.com.au - and program (on year 9 laptops)
7. Hotmail.com - connected to MSN

ok now i play guitar (complete Irrelevance but just keep reading) and i look up guitar and infact by me saying this it will probably get it blocked but

Ultimate-guitar.com

Follow my instructions on comment 198, HURRRPP DURRRP. Little kiddies need to understand that you DON'T need facebook and crap. If this is the next generation, Australia is screwed. Patience is a virtue, learn it idiots, the laptops were introduced as an aid to do your assignments and notes in class on. Not to stuff around at home talking to all your little internet friends. Don't like it? Don't bloody use it! As simple as that, but when you grow up, you'll look back and think "F*uck, I was a dumbarse"

Have fun, and follow my instructions on comment 198 if you want unrestricted acess. That's if, you can even find the jumper lawl. Dumarses :]

NSW DET runs a large whitelist for all edu users on their systems, incl. netbook users.

Any URL needs to be approved.

It is not a question of blocking, it is a question of what they are allowing. Unless there is a request to allow a site or URL, DET folks have neither looked at, approved or disapproved of any specific webpage or service.

No use yelling at them, until there is a request from a school admin or teacher they neither look at sites nor care. Not their job and not the way the system works.

The internet enabled systems are there to access pre-approved sites, URLs and resources. You want a site, then get it approved.

I know, ball-buster of a system but that is the way it works. No one at DET makes any decisions whether a site is suitable UNTIL they get a request from a techer or school admin.

okay so i got my laptop last year, everyone was having a rave about how excited they were to get them. You cant log in to for eg, myspace, facebook or msn, yet they installed msn on the computer, such a waste of my 2g space. I find my laptop to be hopeless and find myself writing out most work by choice. The only good thing about these computers is the fact theres a camera in them. Macs wouldve been a better alternative, speaking from experience with using both computers. I wouldnt of chosen this laptop in the shop and wouldnt give two cents if i lost it in one. Take the laptops back and give us cash so we can buy our own. Theres no way of having gratitude towards the government for this, and now that we are being run by julia, its a joke even more.

Okay so I'm in year 9 and I got my DER laptop a few weeks ago. As has been said above, you only get to keep the laptop if you finish year 12.
I don't know about other schools, but at my school all of the years above and including year nine [9, 10, 11, 12] have received a laptop. As well as most of the teachers.
I know that many people don't like the laptops, mainly for the reasons which have already been outlined; they're slow/laggy, a lot of websites are blocked on them, and they can simply be a pain in the butt- all of their updates etc.
I have to admit that I did come on here to try to find a way to get past the blocks on my very laptop, not out of "disrespect" or "ungratefulness", but because I do not have my own computer at home. I know I wouldn't access any sites I shouldn't be at school, but I can't vouch for other fellow year nines. I mean for god's sake, primary games is blocked on mine! Do they think I'm going to sit in history and play crazy taxi? But what annoys me more is it isn't blocked on other student's computers.
So I found how to get around filters with a proxy, the only problem is, all of the proxy sites are blocked as well. But, a part of me is glad they are because I would more than likely be tempted to access Facebook at school.
So pretty much, I'm 50:50 about the laptops. But I'm sure that we would all be complaining about not having them if the government didn't start the DER.

Anyways, time for me to shut up ;D

hello

Wed 07/07/2010 - 18:54

the laptops are pretty much useless... laggy, everything is blocked, major distraction once you find ways to bypass it...not only that they have rendered us useless in using pen and paper.

im now currently in yr10 so ive already used the laptop for one year and everyone in my grade is finding it difficult to write fast and in large amounts. how the hell are we going to do the HSC if we cant even write a page and not die of hand cramps? thank you laptops!

This is a message for the people who gave us these laptops.

I'm currently in Year 10 and I have a complaint! A few months ago, the government (I think), the Board of Studies, and/or you guys, or whatever, decided to block my school's (Morisset High) ability to run our games as adminestrator when right-clicking them. THIS IS PREPOSTEROUS!!!!! IT IS AGGRAVATING!!!!! TREMENDOUSLY HORRIBLE!!!! I doubt that ANYONE in my year OR in year 9 would find this technologically murdurous indecency riquisit by a long shot! I am far beyond ASTONISHED that you would even DARE do such an aggravating monstrosity to our laptops!!!! And also, HOW DARE YOU BLOCK SO MANY WEBSITES!?!?!?!?!?!? I was going to look up some cheats for my video games and then the site was BLOCKED!!!!!!! And so was U-tube, MSN, E-Bay AND the places where you can download the really cool games! I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS!!!!!!

Someone needs to stop lying about this. The thing is crippled down to half its use. What they're giving us is a virtual typewriter with limited tools NOT a computer.

We're going backward...not forward.

No way would a parent, kid or teacher buy this netbook as is if they had to pay around $500 for it. Doesn't that tell you anything?

This site has edu (education) in the url.
This site would be for the people who can't read very well, so this site read the words for you.
even though it acted as a proxy server. xD. I could get into any site i wanted but these beetchez blocked the muther 4-King site.
Oh well. At least I can run any .exe i want.
vice city, san andreas, garrys mod, counter strike. heaps of programs. like utorrent, mozilla firefox. so on.
But, i need a program that can bypass bluecoat (BLOCKED SITES).

tell me a program if u are reading this. a program that bypasses blocked sites

Fri 23/07/2010 - 20:34

The only way you can really get around everything is by swapping out the current hard drives, and replacing them. this can be done with a 160GB portable HDD. There is a program that gets around BlueCoat. it called puTTY. complicated to get started, makes your internet slow, but there are no blocked sites whatsoever. The only thing I can't do is overclock, if someone knows how to, or knows a website, please share it.

P.S. Don't bother trying to lay games unless they are really old (your quake 1 & 2, UT 1 etc.) They lag to crap because DirectX 3D/OpenGL have been disabled. Only things that run smooth are videos and the previously mentioned games.

P.S.S. DET,

i can work it on my laptop. i sell the game for $5 each. made already $15 in one day! and tell me more about this puTTY program. and where to download and how to use it.
thanks in advance :D

218

Fanta Pants

Sun 25/07/2010 - 17:30

puTTY is a program that can reotely connect to another proxy, an completely sidestep DET blocks, the only downside is that your internet can then run quire slow.
Just search for putty in google, get the texture.exe, and search for the settings. there are quite a few, so you have some choice. there is a guy at our school that sets up these proxies, so we have it easy.

But really its just a matter of googling until you find something.

Enjoy.

To every moron who can't think for themselves:

Are you guys retarded or something?!?! Don't you realise that everytime one of you post a new comment that tells others how to bypass some blocks or something that usually needs 100% admin rights, you give that information to the government??? If the government knows how we all bypass certain blocks, they will just put up some more blocks that take even MORE effort to bypass. And if we bypass those blocks, the government will just put up more ADVANCED blocks and so on, and so forth. And eventually, if the government has no choice, they might just take the laptops back and use tax payers' money on something less high-tech. So THINK about what you post on this website. And stop asking for tips on how to bypass blocks. They made this comment-posting part of the website for a reason.

Ok heres the information.
Ok so these lenovo is for year 9 people and its pretty G @ Y but it is kinda good since you don't use pen/pencil with paper anymore. This lap-top has approx 120gb and below, it has window 7 with all those features such as
eg: Onenote, Photoshop (new), Adobe (includes dreamweaver and lots more), and theres lots more.
This lap-top also have built in 2 megapixel webcam and a microphone, with two usb ports, a network cable to plug and a SD CARD SHO, a touch mouse pad. ( this is the 2009 lap-top).

The 2010 year 9 lap-top they get the same mini lap-top however their one is IBM, its the same however they have big keyboard and its a bit slim. (its not that really different).

Hacking
Yes there are lots of way to hack however im not telling since they could block.
There are teacher's password ( which give acces to everything)
Proxy sever (this one is really hard to find )
You can also play games in this lap-top using photoshop (also im not telling however hint: its in presets(local disk)).

Ok there are updates as well once you updated your lap-top you now can't turn up volumne or minimise the volumne using the key board you have to do it the old fashion way.

I hope i have explainned it all.
However it is better if you use these lap-top for work.
THANKS

yo gangsterz, what is a way to temporarily disable bluecoat?

(NOTE: Bluecoat is the program that blocks sites)

I accidentally disabled it but i dont know how i did it :/

It started when i just got home from school a few days ago, then i was trying to find proxies on google, then usually it says blocked site, but it wasn't blocked! I dont know how i did it though? I was going on any site. facebook, youtube, anything

Next day in the moring at home, it still worked. then i went to school. when i connected to the schools internet. it was all blocked

>:0

Then when i went home in the afternoon to check if it still was unblocked at home, but...
IT WAS BLOCKED! DARN!

please if anyone knows, tell me how, so i can do it again.

im in year 9 and i got my laptop 3 months ago , its pretty good apart from some the blocked sites and applications. It has pretty good memory and its not hard to put games and movies and music on. And the internet works at home and at school , and most sites work , like i can downlaod music and stuff on the net at school, its alrite . It wouldnt be hard to hack it cause its been done , you just have to be careful not to get caught .
im really happy i got one , but personally i dont think the government shouldnt have given it to year 9's cause all they do is listen to music , take pics etc they should have given it to older years cause they probably make more use of it .
but theres nothing you can do about it now :)

You can also run exe files by going into the c drive by:

1. Right click the desktop
2. click new
3. click shortcut
4. then in the box that pops up type "c:" without the quotes.
5. Then once its made it will be somewhere on the desktop
6.then open c drive and click windows
7. once in windows find the folder called system32
8. once you have clicked on system 32 find a folder called catroot2
9. then right click on the second folder something like {f750e6c3- ECT
10.click on create shortcut
11. it will say cannot create shortcut here place on desktop just click yes.
12.put all ur .exe files in here and they will work

BTW, these mo-fo government people are ruining our youth. As is the Board of Studies people. Stop doing what your teachers say. Take a stand and show that us teenagers have a right to choose for ourselves. Take a stand and start thinking for yourselves. And take a stand for THE FUTURE... OF TEEN RIGHTS!!!
Stop listening to adults who think they can boss you around just because they're older than you. Disobey every mo-fo who thinks he/she can order you around.
Beat up midgets and take their lunch and money.
Abuse teachers and civilians who think they can just tell you what to do. Graffiti on school grounds. Put porn on your laptops. Rip up your textbooks and smash the school windows. I'm not kidding here, I am being serious. So tak a stand and prove that you have a right to choose.

Thanks in advance.

i find the blocks the det has set in place is just rediculous everything exept for gov sites are blocked and the ones that arnt are verry new websites which havnt been discovered!
these are meant for school work... how are we meant to research when every-single-site you attempt to access is blocked!!
even the most innocent sites are blocked! some parts of wikkipedia are blocked!!!!! whats innapropriate about wikkipedia!! its a factual forum!! referenced for finding out what something is/how it works ect whats innapropriate about that!!

im gunna ask the repeated question- how can i unblock wesites like msn bebo facebook ect? and if it unblocks rs thats a bonus
proxy servers may work but u may have to use different keywords while searching for them on google, but i wouldnt recomend using google cus thats prolly how the gov finds all the the proxy servers. so use a different serch engine if google fails you. e mail any thing that will unblock bebo/rs at home to
jimeoin.murphy@education.nsw.gov.au

sorry for the gov e mail, i cant make a non gov one with these blocks everywhere!!!

7/11 proxy wont work. been there. used that. got it blocked.
it sucked anyways. it was azn based so whenever u used a link it came up in azn language. so try to find a eng based server coming from a english speaking contry like our home aus!
keep trying!

re 135 deana- the answer
you just did one very dumb thing!you posted importantand info on a abviously monitered site!!! as u posted that Siway.com/Site/Proxy was blocked soon after because some doomed soul monitering this forum saw it in your comment
if you find a way, send it to the email of the ppl who posted their email in the requests for proxy servers, not on a public, monitered forum!

just saying guys...

firstly, be happy you have SOME sort of resource. sure they're not the best or anything, but at least they're there. i do believe that they are a distraction, bad for our eyes, and the money could have been used towards something a little better rather than something we don't really need. i agree with anyone who said maybe the money could be spent on software rather than the actual computer. lenovo is actually good in terms of sturdiness, a lot of people are just careless.
though, having said that, a lot of laptops were breaking at our school due to them giving us the incorrect case. smooth move. i am only 15 so maybe i don't have a great understanding, but with every breakage don't the taxpayers have to pay for it? isn't that a little unfair?

and hahahaha at the grammar arguments. people are so very lazy. which is ironic, seeing as i never use caps.

and lastly; there is more to life than freaking facebook and messenger.

Ok, first of all, to all the noobs that have no idea how these computers work and what kind of security they have on them. These computers have a software called "BlueCoat Proxy Client" which manages all the internet blocks/permissions. Also running Msn on these computers is impossible unless a proxy is used. The only way to run Msn is to login as your administrator and unblock it. To all the idiots that want FB, you need a good proxy. And btw, can't you freaking afford a normal home computer? Why are you complaining here? Just buy a laptop from the shops ($450-500 can get you a decent laptop)

Don't be childish.

Regards- BTW IF THE DET IS READING THIS, YOU SERIOUSLY MADE A MISTAKE BY NOT PATCHING UP THE EXE FOLDERS IN THE 2011 Laptops.

look i am happy that we got given free laptops but i think it sucks that you cant acess stuff like youtube , facebook , msn , skype .. etc. I think they should be blocked when your connected to your student portal of tafe portal at school because it would stop you from lerning and getting a proper education, but at home you should be able to acess them sites because 1. your NOT disrupting your lernig or your peers lering. 2. your at your house so you wont be lering anything anyways 3. its stupid that you cant do it 3. even when you dont want to go on facebook and that and your trying todo a assingnment its 99% of the time the friggen information you need is blocked . Therefore i think at home nothing should be blocked but at school i agree it should be. :)

Dont understand why people say that the government is paying for the software, it clearly states that Microsoft is giving the licenses for free.

If we were to be given the software directly, it would waste time figuring out what to uninstall on our old desktops or laptops filled with crap we think we use all the time when we really dont.

To nearly every person above me, the laptops were given to us for educational use in class, not for looking at porn, using msn or Facebook or even video games.

If you want a laptop that you can classify a laptop for games and w/e, than buy a laptop that isn't from the Department of Education. It's your fault for accepting the laptop and complaining about it.

These computers are like ridiculously protected, myne just had its exe files blocked. im a guitar player and i record stuff and we got audacity on these laptops right? they had to pick the worst audio recording program in the world, it always crashes.....and half the programs on there are a waste of space....stuff some kids wnt use.....and the sites blocked at home is stupid, your not interfering with anyones learning or anything..... The Det Need to make these computers alittle more open, like unblock stuff at home..... and let us run exe files.... i reckon we should be able to put our own programs on there, cause all the programs theyve licenced are so s%$#! the Det need to stop being evil and let us have some privliges on these things, all i think theyre good for is playing footy or plaing fetch with the dog;.....

oh yeah one more thing, If you want to go on any site at home or school well your questions have been answered.
STEP 1: download TOR BROWSER at your home computer.
STEP 2: Download flash player aswell
STEP 3: Extract them and then put it inside the pluggins folders in the protable firefox which is in the TOR BROWSER. (check every single folder in firefox protable.)
STEP 4: Press and hold the shutdown button then turn it on again.
STEP 5: There should be Options on the startup that says "start windows normally, safe mode, safe mode with networking, command prompt."
STEP 6: Pick Safe mode with networking
Wait for it all to load then loginn.......
STEP 7: Run tor browser , it should work now since presets is blocked now it works.

FINAL STEP: Go onto the tools on the top then firefox settings then pluggins then to the tor loggo then options then allow the pluggins then restart the TOR BROWSER.

I used to use the presets folder but now it's blocked ... ^^ Good luck. e-mail me for more info.

Honestly, I think it's kind of a waste of money, and this is coming from a Year 9 student...
I mean, I'm on it right now, instead of doing my math homeork :L it's a distraction.
Like for real, the DET can claim its helpful all they want, but I swear all anyone uses it for in my grade is going on msn during class (yes, we've figured out how to do that within only two days of recieving it..)
Otherwise its just freaking annoying having to always carry and look after this slab, and having to constantly hibernate then restarting beteen classes. I think we've done less work since we've got them...like what's the point? only now we do our work in OneNote instead of actual excersise books...which is pretty crap anyway because when we have to study our netbooks might be crashing or updating or whatever. I guess I'm being overly negative. there are some pros, I guess, being that:

-we don't have to go to the computer room anymore
-comes with photoshop (good if your doing visual arts or pdm etc.)
-you can im people from different classes?

....that's it.

Also, a lot of people have touched on this, but the security is ridiculous. the DET really needs to work on building a better one, i mean we can access msn and facebook, but educational sites are blocked! my school's moodle was blocked for crying out loud!

this was overly long. i guess i just don't want to do math.

Also, most people don't realise how the DET work, because they don't talk to the one person sent from the DET to your school.

The DET work altogether, not just one person per school.

If the person from the DET blocks a website from Western Australia, it will affect every single school, so you can't say it's unfair that it's only affecting your school.

Yes .. If you wanna go on facebook, there is a way. Safe mode allows exe programs work. All I do with the laptop at school is play on Primary Games (fun, unblocked site), watch movies and play flash games I put on it. At home I don't touch it, aside from transferring my files to my home laptop. This is mainly because of the ridiculous amount of blocked sites on the laptop. EVEN ones I want to use for work.
Plus, the laptops are a distraction. I no longer do any work. The teacher assumes I'm working my arse off, but really I'm playing games.

the laptops itself isn't wat u would call "great" quality
its more like shi* quality.
i have a Mini 10 (x100e)
the plastic around the VGA port is cracked
the battery is cracked
a x100e is suppose to have a rollcage ours doesn't have 1 it just flops around like a floppy pieceof shi*

And these laptops LAGS
i just got mine remiaged and they added all the CS5 pakage which (sadly) makes the laptop even laggier I don''t c the point of putting them onto the laptops they r too laggy to be even used properly.

i tried to edit a video in premier and it is basically playing te video 1fps

opening 2 windows at once lags the computer

opening microsoft words takes 10-15-30-60 secs on my pc (depending on wat im running atm)

i am using the laptop to read this forum...

These laptops are worse than nothing. Everyone spends their time playing games (Tetris is "in" at the moment) and not learning anything. Everyone's handwriting looks terrible and all the teacher think it's good to set us work on these laptops. Of course, there's a few people who've forgotten their laptops, their laptops aren't charged or their laptops are just stuffed up. They then end up having to just sit there because teachers can't be bothered running off hard copies for them. Currently my laptop is stuffed up.
@anon: I got here by googling, "I hate school laptops"

I have heard that for the current year 11's with the s10e the warranty expires really soon so the laptop will be completely our responsibility which, as a result, will mean the filters and blocks are removed (blocked sites removed for home use only) sometime early next year.

Can anyone elaborate on this for me?

What rubbish, these laptops wont do anything but encourage students to waste time. Personally I couldn't think of anything worse for a student than having to lug around an expensive laptop all day, worrying about if the weather is going to destroy it or not. If my school books didn't always survive between leaking lunch boxs, bad weather and the general physical battery a school bag takes, then I hardly see how these laptops are appropriate.

Being someone who got the 2011 'green' laptops, I guess I can talk...

In response to what many people have said about these laptops being great and all, that is utterly not true. I attempted to download the image manipulation program GIMP, and it is blocked.Trying to access sites like sourceforge and filetube to get things like tutorials for blender (3d animating program) is impossible. I attempted to run a simple program such as blender, and it is 'blocked by group policy'. Even educational stuff is blocked. It is very unjust. Not to menton that they are very slow. Attempting to open OneNote and Photoshop puts such a strain on the computer that the only way to close both programs is to either force quit (which doesnt work half the time) or force shut down the laptop. It is absolutely ridiculous. To add to this, teachers say we have to bring the laptops everyday, and when you carry a maths book, some other books for writing and the laptop, your bag becomes unbelievably heavy.

There's a lot more I could argue why the laptop are crap, but I think I've said enough

331

Anonn.

Sat 12/11/2011 - 12:28

@anon. (above)
I totally agree with you. Like, seriously, we have to carry our usual load of books (including textbooks) and then the laptop as well as our P.E clothing and such on some days. It's stupid to have to bring your books as well as the laptop. I don't get the point of it. It would be better if we didn't have to bring any books and substitute it with the laptop. Also, there are programs that i would LOVE to use, but they don't work. Seriously, what's the point? Things like MSN & iTunes are installed, but don't work. Either way, I personally think it's a stupid idea. We didn't even get the choice or the laptop. We had to sign the papers and then we were forced to bring it to school everyday; otherwise, we'd get into trouble. The DET is really naive if they think blocking everything will solve the use of using youtube, playing games or even going through explicit sites. There is a way through everything. I've seen it done with my own eyes and I'm going to try it soon enough.

This is a complete waste of time, every day I see students trying to get past the D.E.T portal or downloading games from home and bringing them to school bringing or gaming on their new nettbooks. Children are too smart these days so I say why not unblock games?! Most children get games on school coomputers easilly so why not just give them what they want instead of them accidently bringing a virus to school on a U.S.B and ruining the computer therefore making you, the taxpayers pay for new ones. Im not saying unblock porn or excessively violent games, just enough to keep them satisfied.

@345 Not DET portal, just DET email.

See, DET email is hosted on the Gmail domain, so they can't block the Gmail homepage without blocking DET email.

You can see where this is going.

For the past two days, DET has been going insane trying to find a way to block Gmail and keep DET email unblocked at the same time. One of my friends was up all night intermittently checking DET email and it kept blocking and unblocking itself. It was freaking hilarious.

And yes, the government issued email that we are encouraged to use is still blocked.

Goes to show how incompetent our government is. Not that anyone needs anymore persuasion, given everything happening in Parliament nowadays.

Well, for me MSN is 'out of date' and it's telling me to update to a more recent version but of course, I can't download anything without triggering a pipe bomb or something.

They still have DET email blocked. My God.

Guys, if you want to just unblock everything its very easy. Just navigate to your keyboard and press the F13 button. It automatically unblocks everything and leaves you with a smile on your face :)

Bullcrap, there is no F13 button on the laptops.

I did h4x my bull sh!t laptop so easily... I gained administration access. And that will allow me to disable bluecoat and let me run .exe files... To all you script skids. I am not going to tell you... Go figure. Even if I did tell you... Your going to get caught so easily. So it's best only to "hack" these laptops if you know what your actually doing, don't even attempt if your an absoloute n00b. or a script skid. You need to be => hacker level, or else just wait till you finish year 12... Then you can gain access to all them pr0n sites you wanted to get on... lol sad wankers, get a life really. The hardware on them sh!t tops are useles...

okay, so most of u guys fail.
all you have to do is start up your laptop normally- then remove battery -start again -select "safe mode with networking. >wallah .exe's work -only fail is that the graphics and sound drivers do not start.

(> plus batch files are easily used to overthrow the bluecoat, pass many blocked sites, dont try an admin password though they can trace your recent credentials and see what you've been on <)

Anonimo, as of the laptops in 2012 (I got one of them, I'm in yr9 atm), safe mode only works for admins. A way I got around all that protection (the TPM and hardware tracking etc.) is hijacking Windows Update (*secret*).

There are some in my school who are, like, having major competitions to hack the laptops. A word of warning: make sure that you got a backup plan. Some student in my class got busted a week ago for playing games, he/she was admin and couldn't reinstall Blue Coat filter and when the tso found out, he/she had it confiscated for a term. Make some system restore point or something....

PS. if det is actually watching this, let me send you a message: I have your private encryption keys... set up a fake nswdet network.....
