Just in time for the start of the AFL season, Internode announced Friday it will provide free, round-the-clock Wi-Fi throughout the MCG stadium, under a three-year deal with the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC).
The Adelaide-based ISP has voluntarily extended its network coverage, with 26 access points across the MCG, to provide free wireless Web browsing to any visitor with a Wi-Fi-capable device.
"We have worked collaboratively with Internode to ensure a robust Wi-Fi offering is widely available throughout the venue,” MCC general manager of commercial operations Lisa Trainor said.
“It helps the MCG remain a destination of choice, not just for visitors to attend sporting events and concerts, but also as a valuable tool for the many businesses and corporate guests who use the Wi-Fi service on other days throughout the year."
Affectionately known as “The G”, the MCG is Australia’s largest sporting stadium and recognised throughout the world.
In addition to hosting AFL throughout the winter and cricket in the summer, the MCG is also becoming the venue of choice to host functions, conferences, and wedding receptions, and boasted more than three million visitors last year.
Internode has re-designed the existing wireless network to provide access point redundancy and bolster the network’s uptime.
The network is linked to Internode’s national network and will also support the MCC's regular Internet requirements.
