Chipmaker commits to LTE 4G chipset security

LG Electronics going with embedded security from Discretix.

LG Electronics plans to protect its future Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G chipsets and phones with an embedded security system from Israel-based Discretix.

Discretix's CryptoCell system includes a hardware core layer that can be implemented on the underlying modem chipset and middleware elements that create secure access to the hardware and include a secure boot mechanism. Also included are application-layer toolkits and APIs to support applications such as secure digital rights management, mobile TV security, IPSec, and firmware-over-the-air to update or patch device software.

In February, Discretix released versions of its DRM and Mobile TV security clients for the Linux-based Android mobile phone operating system, from the Open Handset Alliance.  The company targets mobile and embedded markets with its security infrastructure.

LG Electronics, the Korean electronics giant, unveiled in December its LTE chipsets, which are protected by over 300 patents. The chipsets can deliver download speeds of 100Mbps and upload speeds of 50Mbps, according to LG executives. That far surpasses 3G standards such as High Speed Download Packet Access and High Speed Uplink Packet Access.

The security news is the latest in a series of announcements by LG that outline some of the technology directions the company is taking with mobile devices. The company recently signed an agreement to work with Qualcomm to implement the latter's mirasol display technology, which is said to use much less power than other displays. Mirasol screens can make use of ambient light to show colors clearly even in direct sunlight. 

The company recently showed off its new touch, 3-D S-Class User Interface in the new Arena smartphones.
