Dell today unveiled what it claims is the world's thinnest laptop. The Adamo will be released under the Adamo by Dell brand name. Aimed at users who are after a fashionable and well-crafted product, the Adamo will be priced from $3699 for the standard model, which has a 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB of DDR3 RAM and a 128MB solid-state drive.

The laptop uses an aluminium chassis that is 1.6cm thick. It has a 13.4in screen with edge-to-edge glass and a built-in webcam. Dell's Evan Williams said that "the intent was for people to see, touch and explore Adamo and be rewarded by the selected materials and craftsmanship you would expect in a fine watch".

The notebook has a DisplayPort, two USB 2.0 ports, a USB/eSATA combo port and a networking port. The solid-state drive is standard, as are 802.11n wireless networking, Bluetooth 2.1 and the 64-bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium. There are options for mobile broadband connectivity and an external DVD burner or Blu-ray drive.

The Adamo will be available in two colours, pearl (white) and onyx (black), with a choice of CPU — 1.2GHz or 1.4GHz. It can be pre-ordered today from www.adamobydell.com, and units are set to ship to customers from 26 March.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
