Emerson Network Power has expanded its Energy Logic framework with the introduction of a Compute Units Per Second (CUPS) measurement.

The CUPS metric has been designed to give datacentre operators a way to quantify energy efficiency across the datacentre, and help them prioritise what actions they can take to reduce energy usage. The metric is calculated as a relative measure of server output, based on average server performance.

Emerson director of marketing, Peter Spiteri, said the metric was designed to address the increasing need to measure different efficiencies between IT equipment within datacentres.

“You can’t measure efficiency in the same way as you might measure the number of miles you get out of a gallon of petrol. It’s easy to measure the number of watts going into a datacentre, but not as easy to compare what is coming out of the other end. So the question becomes ‘how do I compare the outputs of datacentres?’” Spiteri said.

The CUPS metric can be used by resellers in conjunction with the Energy Logic framework to audit customers’ datacentres and prescribe energy saving steps with a quantifiable reward.

The Energy Logic framework was launched in 2008 and gives companies a step-by-step framework for reducing energy consumption.

“Datacentres are on the radar now that they use more energy than airlines,” Spiteri said. “With the global economy and credit crunch as well, the subject is going to get much bigger this year.”
